Can I apply for the Thailand remote work visa (DTV) before my TR visa expires?

Hello,

Later this month, I plan to apply for the Thailand remote work visa (Destination Thailand Visa - DTV) in Jakarta, Indonesia. However, I currently hold a 6-month TR visa issued by the Thai Embassy in Tokyo Japan, which expires on July 12. My current stay as a tourist in Thailand will end on June 27 (I've already extended by 30 days). Therefore, it seems I'll need to unnecessarily stay in Indonesia for 16 days, waiting for my TR visa to expire before applying for the DTV.

I know you might say to me to come out and back to Thailand and gain another 60 days to stay in Thailand, but I would like to obtain a DTV as soon as possible.

I've noticed several comments in this group—some mention successfully applying for the DTV before their existing visa expired, while others advise waiting until the current visa has fully expired. Is it indeed safe and possible to apply for the DTV before my TR visa expires?

If anyone has successfully or unsuccessfully applied for the DTV while their TR or Education visas were still valid, please share your experience. Your insights would be greatly appreciated😀

TLDR : Answer Summary

There are no successful posts about people with valid MULTI-ENTRY VISAS who applied for a DTV before their previous visa expired

The people who said they applied for a DTV had a single entry tourist visa <- which meant the stamp cancelled when they exited, AND the people who said they got it from an ED visa, really had an "extension of stay" from the immigration office here <- which is not a visa

You cannot hold two valid VISAS in your passport at the same time, you'll get denied

IF you have a 6 month METV you wait for that visa itself to expire before you apply or you'll get your DTV application rejected

You wait it out, THEN apply once that visa is no longer valid for entry to thailand

Thanks for your explanations above! Really helpful.

So that means I can apply for DTV on the 13th of July (one day after the TR visa expires) correct?

Stamp out of Thailand on the 13th of July

If it's a single entry, it will get cancelled automatically once you leave the Kingdom. At least I can vouch it worked like that for me in the past, but I didn't extended it in country, tho.

they hold a 6 month METV<-multi-entry tourist visa

Adnan Khairi you didn't have a 6 month METV that was still valid when you applied for a DTV 😕

Go to the immigration office and ask / cancel your current visa before.

I went to ask at the immigration today. But they said they are not in charge of visa cancellation. But thanks for your advice anyways!

@Henrik ****
they can't 🙁 Immigrations inside thailand can't cancel VISAS, 😮 they can cancel extensions only

The visa the O/P holds is a 6 month METV that they got from a thai consulate in their country before they came here. There is no way to cancel it. They wait it out and apply for a DTV once the METV itself expires

Theoretically it is not possible, since one cannot hold more than one valid visa.

Not true, i had 2 tourist visa at the same time one 2month visa as tourist and then i applied for DTV and got the DTV, when i came to BKK they asked me which visa i like to use since both were valid....and they both issued from same embassy....

Adnan Khairi Hence the word "theoretically".
