Why was my DTV application converted to a Tourist Visa (TR) instead?

Has anyone had a DTV application converted to a Tourist Visa (TR)?

I applied for a DTV through the Royal Thai Embassy in Jakarta and paid the DTV application fee (5.6 million IDR).

After submission, the embassy requested additional documents including:

• Professional portfolio / proof of remote work

• Business registration

• Plan of stay in Thailand

• Full passport copy

I uploaded everything requested, including my professional portfolio, self-employment documents, proof of income, Stripe/bank records, and business information.

The only thing in the reply email that I am not sure of is: I said my plan in thailand was to stay 180 days minimum but I did not give great detail to the exact timeline of my 5 years and future event plans.

A few days later, I was issued a visa, but the visa category shows:

• Tourist TR

• Multiple Entry

• Valid for 6 months

There was no explanation as to why I received a TR visa instead of a DTV.

I'm curious if anyone else has experienced this.

Questions:

• Has your DTV application ever been converted to a TR visa?

• Has anyone successfully obtained clarification from the embassy in a similar situation?

• Could this be overturned?

• Is this Jakarta zone being very strict or it happens everywhere?

Timeline:

• 24 May – Paid DTV application fee

• 9 June – Embassy requested additional documents

• 9–10 June – Uploaded requested documents

• 12 June – Visa issued as Tourist TR (Multiple Entry)

I'd appreciate hearing if anyone has had a similar experience, especially through Jakarta.
Answer summary
The user describes their experience applying for a Digital Nomad Visa (DTV) through the Royal Thai Embassy in Jakarta but received a Tourist Visa (TR) instead, leading to confusion. They provided various documents, including proof of remote work and a plan detailing a 180-day minimum stay. However, the embassy issued a multiple-entry tourist visa without explanation, prompting the user to seek others' experiences regarding similar cases, possible clarifications from the embassy, and whether this reflects a strict stance by the Jakarta office.

Yes. When embassies feel that you havent met conditions for dtv, instrad of giving you rejection outright, they might decide to give you tourist visa instead. Or they might give you other visas they feel you meet the conditions.

We have seen it happen for Soft Power, but for workation you're not meant to be able to even work remotely on any type of tourist visa. It just seems crazy.

There's no way for us to know the reason why they did not give you a DTV visa, you can only get the answer from the embassy. They rarely give an answer in the decision email, you have to call or email them. But If what you wrote is your entire cover letter, it's too short and vague, and there's lots of problems with it.

First, you wrote ireland-based. It's a bit contradictory if you're working remotely, then Ireland would not be your base. Thailand would be your base if you plan to work remotely from Thailand. Unless you're saying the business is registered in Ireland. You didn't give more details about how the business works, how it is remote, how do you host the sessions etc. You said no intention to seek employment in Thailand. That's not right. It should be "do not and will not". Intention gives the impression of maybe. You only gave them a plan for the next 6 months when they asked you for your 5-year plan. If you tell them you're only staying 6 months then why would they give you 5 years? It's not about telling them you're staying in one place for 5 years continuously. You can tell them how often you'll be coming for the next 5 years and for how long each time and what you do in Thailand. Did you show payslips or payment or statements with the payments highlighted? Did you explain your annual income, show a calculation, provide tax returns, anything that proves earnings from business, contracts? Self-employed freelancer needs alternate proof if you don't have an employment contract. Was there any indication that your remote work would still be running for the next 5 years?

Anonymous participant 804 I actually gave all these details in great detail. This was not my cover letter. It was a further document I had to reply about my plan in Thailand.

I sense that I was close to being accepted but possibly I didn’t express clarity about my long term plan.

It’s happened to lots of people

They obviously deem that the Visa they have given you is adequate rather than the one you applied for

I understand you’re disappointed, but it’s better than being completely rejected and getting no Visa

It has happened often - if the embassy thinks a different visa better fits you, they give that instead. Your answer about being here 90-180 days probably caused this. Nothing you can do now, except reapply once the visa expires

OP
DTV_BegPecker you think it’s that simple? No other possible reason?

Next time I should explicitly say that I will spend 5 years staying in one place?

Anonymous participant - There have been many people on this page who ended up in the same position (20-30+ at least). It usually means that the embassy felt like you could do what you wanted to do with a tourist visa, that you didn’t need a longer DTV. Usually, we see it with soft power courses that are short length. First if they were under 6 months, now some are saying in under 9 months. However, since you applied under workcation category, they must have reason to believe that you would be staying for short amount of time and therefore didn’t need a longer visa. When did you say you would return again?

Activities Tourism and cultural activities and personal travel within Thailand.

For max 180 days.

Why did you apply for the incorrect visa and what purpose did you use?

Yes, it's quite common they grant a METV when they consider there's no real need for you to stay beyond six months, ie because you showed you booked a 6-month or shorter course

YEP 👍 that's happening now more than before.

Yes, happened to me from Mumbai, India. I had applied for DTV workation and have a travel company. The explanation given to me was that a travel company does not fall under remote work category. I have got my METV cancelled for now and plan to reapply for soft power dtv.

Yes i emailed the embassy and had the metv cancelled.. I am planning to reapply for the dtv via issa compass.. and one of their conditions was to cancel the metv before reapplying.. did you email the embassy asking for an explanation though? We did so after receiving the metv.

my reason given written was: To continue operating my self-employed online coaching and consulting business remotely while staying in Thailand.

My clients are located outside Thailand and my income is generated from international clients through online services.

Intended Location: Koh Samui, Thailand Intended

Duration of Stay: Approximately 90–180 days Accommodation: I intend to stay in temporary accommodation in Koh Samui and arrange longer-term accommodation after arrival.

Activities During Stay: ● Remote online work for international clients ● Tourism and cultural activities ● Personal travel within Thailand I do not intend to seek employment in Thailand or provide services to Thai clients.

what is the reason you give them that they cannot deny it?

That I promise to be a paying tourist for 5 straight years?

Typical from a number of embassies these days. If they don’t think your application warrants a 5 year visa then rather than outright rejection (where you would loose the application fee entirely) they give you a 6 month METV.

I am a digital nomad. the written reason I gave to stay longer was:

To continue operating my Ireland-based self-employed online coaching and consulting business remotely while staying in Thailand.

My clients are located outside Thailand and my income is generated from international clients through online services.

Intended Duration of Stay: Approximately 90–180 days Accommodation: I intend to stay in temporary accommodation in Koh Samui and arrange longer-term accommodation after arrival.

Maybe i should have sent them a 5 year plan?

Participant(e) anonyme they gave you what you asked for😅 it was worded like you only needed a 180 day visa.

Rather than, "I intend to perform remote work from Thailand for the next 5 years".

Anonymous participant yep. You said you would only spend 180 days in Thailand so the METV covers that, although in my view it doesn't provide legal permission to work remotely from Thailand so isn't much use to you for that. Nothing you can do now, you can't reapply until the METV expires.
