I have had a bank account in thailand for several years, I intend to apply for a non o visa for retirement later this year. Can I deposit my 800,000 bht now and apply for the 12 month extension when I arrive in Thailand? Or do you have to deposit the 800,000bht after I arrive in the Kingdom?
Answer summary
You can deposit the 800,000 Baht into your bank account before you arrive in Thailand, but there are specific conditions. It's advisable to ensure your bank account remains active and not frozen. Once the funds have been in your account for at least 2 months, you can apply for a 12-month extension of stay at the immigration office. It’s better to apply for the initial 90-day Non-O visa before arriving, but if needed, you can also apply for it inside Thailand, given you meet the requirements.

Best to check first that your Thai bank account is still active. They are being frozen or closed if you don’t have a visa.

Kevin Dunne Nonsense ! My agent is nothing like that. And it's THB, not quid.

If you have a monthly income of at least 65,000 Baht, you do not need to deposit funds in a blocked bank account.

Alain Maillard I believe he will need the 800k the 1st year. While here deposit 12 foreign transfers into his account and apply for the extension next year on the 12 monthly deposit basis

If you're applying for the 90-day non-o before you get here make sure you're able to show the 800k somewhere, otherwise if you're going to apply for it once you get here it absolutely needs to be in the Thai bank, and then season it for 2 months before you apply for your extension.

There are several options of routes you can take.

*** ONE: Apply for the 90-days Non-O visa before you fly to Thailand and transfer a minimum of 800,000 THB after you have arrived in Thailand (you first should make sure that your Thai bank account is still open and active).

Up from 30 days before your 90-days stay permit expires and the money has been sitting in your account for 2 months, visit the bank, get the “bank letter of guarantee” (rab roong thanakan) that confirms the seasoning. Then visit Immigration and apply for the 1-year extension of the stay permit. The application fee is 1900 THB

*** TWO: enter Thailand visa exempt or on a tourist visa, check that your Thai bank account is up and working. Transfer a minimum of 800,000 THB into your account.

Once the money is sitting in your account, and you have a proof that the money came from abroad, and you have a rental contract and a minimum of 15 workdays left on your entry stamp permission of stay, you can apply on Immigration for the “change of visa type” to the initial 90-days Non-O visa. The application fee is 2000 THB.

After a 2-months seasoning, and up from 30 days before the 90-days stay permit out of the Non-O visa expires, visit the bank, get the “bank letter of guarantee” (rab roong thanakan) that confirms the seasoning. Then visit Immigration and apply for the 1-year extension of the stay permit. The application fee is 1900 THB

If you arrive in Thailand on 90 day non-O visa, you can apply at most immigration 30 days before end of your 90-day entry stamp (Phuket and some other is 45 days) for the 12 months extension of stay.

Kevin Dunne Wrong. I got non o on a tourist visa inside Thailand last year, and the agent arrange the 90d non o plus the 1 year extension on the same day. The necessary funds were already deposited by me in the thai bank 2 months beforehand
