I’m a U.S. Citizen living in Khon Kaen on a retirement visa.

Current passport expires April, 6 2026.

Current visa expires November 21 2025.

Can I apply for a “new” 1 year retirement visa on November 1 2025 so that there’s at least 6 months on my passport?

TLDR : Answer Summary
A U.S. citizen residing in Khon Kaen on a retirement visa is inquiring about applying for a new retirement visa before their passport expires later in 2025. Multiple comments suggest that while it is possible to apply for an extension, it will only be valid until the passport's expiration date. It's recommended that the individual renew their passport prior to applying for any visa extensions to avoid losing time on their visa validity.

Hey Paul good luck with your passport. I'm in khon kaen also and had to get my new U.S. passport not to long ago. I sent the application and everything Thai post to the embassy. They did a great job getting my new passport back to me. Took about 2 months to get back my new passport. After I just took my old and new passbook to khon kaen immigration and they transferred all the visa info from my old to my new passbook. I got my 1 yr extension renewal coming up in February fun fun 🙄lolll

Yes, you can apply for an extension. But your extension will only be granted until the expiration date of your passport if it's less than 1-year, so your extension will end on April 6th, 2026. Once you renew your passport, and get your extension moved to your new passport, all of your yearly extensions from that point forward will be on April 6th. If you find that of benefit to you then you can do it that way, otherwise you should renew your passport before your apply for your next extension so you do not lose any time from it.

I renewed in person at the US Embassy in Bangkok. Very easy. I didn't want any issues with the mail so I also requested it to be held for pickup when ready and to be notified. It took about 3 weeks. I went back to Bangkok for a 2nd visit to pick it up. Zero risk that way.

I recently read about a US guy renewing his passport in Chiang Mai so you don't have to go to Bangkok. I also have a friend whose passport was lost in transit by Kerry Express :(

My Passport renewal was very easy, normal procedures. I did it by mail and got a new one in hand by the 11th days of sending applications.

There are some American Expat FB groups in Thailand that may cover the passport renewal process for Americans. The Embassy website also gives detailed procedure for renewal. A little confusing because it is detailed. I think the FB groups can give you a good idea how long it may take for renewal.

thank you. Probably better to renew my passport ahead of time then.

I’ve looked at the U.S. Embassy website, I got dizzy because it sent me in so many circles.

renew it before and save yourself the trouble.

"There is no limit on how early you can renew your passport, but the U.S. Department of State suggests renewing it nine months before the expiration date."
