How soon before my retirement visa expires can I apply for an extension?
How close to retirement visa end date is too late to apply for first extension.
Answer summary
You can apply for an extension of your retirement visa up to 45 days before its expiration. It's advised to apply when you have a minimum of 14 days remaining. Many users recommend applying early—some even do it three months ahead of expiry—to avoid complications. Additionally, be aware of your passport's expiry date, as it can affect the duration of your extension.

Before I comment I just want to clarify something. So, you are in Thailand on a retirement visa ( OA ) which you obtained in your home country before your arrival. Your one-year retirement visa ( OA ) is coming to an end? Is that right?

Just been to find out from immigration. Maximum is 45 days early.

Most immigration will like you to make your application about 1 month before expiry, but go early, get the application form and updated list of requirements, and ask when to apply.

in Phuket you can only do it 45 days before expiryTony *********
The only other thing to be aware of is the expiry date of your passport. When I renewed my retirement extension last year I only had 6 months remaining on my passport so they could only give me a 6-month extension right up until the date of expiry of the passport. When I renewed the passport I went back when the 6 months was up and renewed for another full year.

Do you happen to know if you also get a full new 12 months extension when changing passports prior to the actual expiry, e.g. because you need a minimum validity of your passport for international travel or because the passport was lost?Tony *********
@Alex ******
if the passport you are using to get your extension has more than 12 months validity then you will get a 12-month extension but if it has less than 12 months they will give you the amount that is left on your passport. They only care about the passport you turn up with at their office. When you get a new passport you will have to go to immigration to get your visa stamp transferred to the new passport but you won't get a new extension at that point until the old one runs out.

You can apply already 2 month prior the expiration. The extension starts next day after expiry date.Tom ********

it certainly was for me in March of this year, regarding renewal

And be mindful of weekends and holidays as Tony noted a bit earlier is wise

I have previously renewed my retirement extension on the day before expiry date although it's advisable to do it earlier in case anything goes wrong like not having the right paperwork.

You must have a minimum of 14 days left so apply before then
