TLDR : Answer Summary
A US citizen with a valid retirement visa might still be able to enter Thailand with a passport that has less than 6 months of validity, although it's recommended to have at least 6 months. If the passport is close to expiration, acquiring a new passport is advised, which can be done by applying through the US Embassy in Bangkok after entering. If entry does occur with the current passport, the visa validity will only match the passport's expiration date.

If you have the OA retirement visa you will only get a stamp valid until your passport expires. You will not get a new 12 month stamp when you enter Thailand. If you're on a type O extension, with a re-entry permit, it was dated no longer that your passport expiry date when you got it. Get a new passport first, then contact the Thai embassy to get your visa transferred into your new passport.

when you check-in with the airline the expiration will pop up as not meeting the 6 month validity passed your intended stay and will therefore not be able to travel. my friend got their new pp in about 5 weeks recently.

You can. Passport validity of 6 months from the date of entry is recommended for Thailand. (If it were mandatory I think they would say that.)
After entering Thailand I would apply for a passport by mail via the US Embassy Bangkok. I just received my new US passport by mail this past week, about two weeks after I applied. All is done by mail. A very efficient process. You basically get expedited service in Thailand for free and you are not charged an execution fee (acceptance fee) of $35 as you would in the US. You do have to pay postage. About 40 baht for mailing your passport application to US Embassy Bangkok and 100 baht to receive the passport back using Thai Post EMS.
Just a recommendation: you might want to get your passport photo taken in the US. You can certainly have it done in Thailand but you need to make sure they do it in the proper format for a US passport and not the usual size for Thai immigration. They are not the same.

plus your retirement visa will expire along with your passport
yes, correct. If you don’t change your passport before it expires then visa expires automatically along with the passport. You would need to transfer your visa to a new passport prior to old one expiring.
It might be possible but why not get a new passport first. You can enter with the new passport and showing the visa in the old passport. You just travel with both passports.
It's not like the US visa, you can't enter Thailand with the visa on a different passport. You'll need to ask the embassy to transfer your existing visa to the new passport.
I believe he is correct about being able to use the current passport with a still valid Thai visa in the old passport. Not only can you come back into Thailand with a re-entry permit in your old passport that is the only way as they do not transfer re-entry permits from an old to a new passport.
