Do I need a new passport before extending my 90-day Non-O retirement visa if I have less than 18 months left on my current passport?

I will be applying for my first 90 non O visa (retirement) in mid August. When I return to immigration for the extension in November I see I will have more than a year but less than 18 months remaining on my passport.

Will I need a new passport prior to requesting the extension or will I have sufficient time?

TLDR : Answer Summary
You do not need a new passport before applying for the extension of your 90-day Non-O retirement visa, as long as you have at least one year of validity remaining on your passport at the time of application. Extensions will be issued for the full year if this requirement is met.

nope, as long as you have a year left on your passport when you apply for the extension they will issue it for the full year.

It's only when you don't have a year validity of your passport when you apply that they issue it for the duration of the passport.

SOME Immigration offices (like bangkok) will take your affirmation of income document you present for the Non-O, tell you to go copy it and then stamp and write on the copy that you can use that one for the subsequent yearly extension.

Some offices make you get two documents one for the 90 day Non-O and one for the yearly extension 2 months later.

remember you need a mininum of 15 days left on your current stamp to apply for a 90 day Non-O visa inside the country at the immigration office (except Chiang Mai wants you to have 21 days left) and some smaller offices can't even do the in country conversion.

just to clarify....I will present a financial document upon applying for the Non O and when applying for the extension three months hence provide a new (second) financial document. Correct?

Secondarily when you provide the proof of income document from your consulate initially can you use the same document for proof at the renewal or do you have to return with a fresh statement?
