What happens if my retirement visa extension application is affected by my passport expiration?

ORIGINAL POSTER
I am a UK passport holder on a non O retirement visa.

I need to renew the extension to my retirement visa by 1 July 2023. My passport expires on 18 April 2024. I therefore do not have 12 months left on my passport for the full extension.

Will an extension be granted to the expiry date of my passport? Or will the extension be granted for the full 12 months but then has to be transferred to my new passport?

If I apply for a new passport now and it is not returned by the time of my extension expiry, what happens?

Thank you.

TLDR : Answer Summary
A UK passport holder on a Non-O retirement visa needs to renew their visa extension but faces issues due to their passport expiring before the extension period is complete. The extension can only be granted up to the passport's expiration date. If applying for a new passport, and the renewal isn't returned before the passport expiry, this could result in an overstay. It's advisable to apply for a new passport before attempting to extend the visa to avoid complications.

If you use an agent to get a new passport you should not be without your old one for more than a few days when you apply and when the new one arrives. Get the stamp transferred by the agent before they send it back. If you need to fly domestic without your passport you can board using Thai driving license if you have one.

A CURRENT visa can always be transferred to a renewed passport.

BUT, a NEW visa can never be transferred to a RENEWED passport. This NEW visa will always be attached and limited to the passport it's been done on/for, until the last day of the current passport validity MAXIMUM..

True. But the OP is getting a new Extension of Stay not a new visa.

It doesn't change anything to all I said as technically, an extension of stay IS a new visa (new stamp, new number, new date of start, new 12 month validity, new expiry date, all that exclusively attached/limited to the passport it was applied for and until that passport expires if meant to happen before the visa does).

I got one valid till the expiration date of my PP last year.

Some have found it convenient as a way of “moving” their annual renewal date to a time they are more likely to be in Thailand.

Conversely that may not be what you want. If so get a new passport before applying.

The extension can only be issued up to the expiry of your passport. Apply for a new passport if you want the full 12 months.

If you apply for a 1 year extension and your visa does not have 1 year validity, you will receive a stamp that is valid until the expiration date of your passport.

If part of your passport renewal involves not having your passport and you do not have it when your current stay expires, then you will be on overstay in Thailand.
