TLDR : Answer Summary
To convert from a Non-B visa with a Work Permit to a DTV visa, you would need to cancel your work permit and your work extension first. After that, you must leave Thailand to obtain the DTV visa and then return. It's important to note that with a DTV visa, you cannot work in Thailand or obtain a work permit. As the DTV visa is new, requirements may vary by embassy or consulate, with some asking for proof of residency.

Because the DTV is new, any suggestions are informed guesses at best, but from what some reports suggest, a fair few embassies and consulates are asking for proof of residency. But apparently Vientiane isn't - you'd have to check for each individual embassy and consulate.

thats the other unanswered thing as well. Do u need to apply where u are resident? A lot of nomads will obviously already be out of their home country!

have you stopped working already? Are you on an extension of stay or the initial visa?

no my plan is to stop working once I get DTV as then I can work online here and travel more and employ a manager for my company instead of doing it myself. If obviously DTV gets rejected for any reason I would continue working as manager of my company

I think you would have to cancel your work permit and extension of stay before you leave to get the DTV. If you don't get the DTV you could always start over with a work visa and permit. You can't do anything other than remote work on the DTV though.

yes I know re remote work re DTV hence having to cancel WP & Non B and employ a manager in my current role.

There's nothing special about the DTV in this regard. You would do it like any other visa conversion.

You would cancel your work permit and then your work extension, and then you would leave Thailand and get your DTV visa and then you can return. You cannot get a work permit with DTV nor can you work for a company in Thailand with DTV.

so my thinking was, as DTV does not need to be activated immediately, get the DTV approved but then re-enter Thailand on Non B. Then proceed with Non B etc cancels, exit country and come back in on DTV

technically the embassy could deny your DTV application if you still have an active extension and re-entry permit inside your passport. It's a tricky situation.

yeah I know! Thats why was hoping anyone who had done it could advise as well! They could deny after cancelling Non B & WP and then need go through that all again! Im sure they would recognise that someone is not going to cancel a good visa prior to being approved for DTv one though

you will be denied a new visa, if you are still on a valid extension and a work permit. The only way not to be denied the DTV application ist to cancel the work permit and leave Thailand

yeah I thought that would be the case. I was just wondering if could first get the DTV and then cancel WP etc. Just in case DTV gets refused for any reason

why and how you have a work permit if you don't work for a Thai company?

@Myles ******
nope. You won't get issued with a DTV while still having a valid visa/extension
