Can I apply for a 60-day family extension for my visa due to my half-Thai son before my current Non-Imm 'B' visa expires?

Hi, currently on a 90 day Non-Imm 'B' e-visa based on working for a school obtained from Vientiane, due to expire on Sept 24. I have decided this isn't the school for me. I deliberately put off applying for the work permit and extending the original visa so there are no issues on that front. My question is can I apply for a 60-day visiting family extension based on my half-Thai son before Sept 24 to tide me over until I find a more suitable employer? Many Thanks!

TLDR : Answer Summary
The individual is currently in Thailand on a 90-day Non-Immigrant 'B' e-visa and is considering applying for a 60-day family visit extension based on their half-Thai son before their visa expires. They have delayed applying for a work permit with their current employer and are unsure about the eligibility for the extension. Experts suggest that it may depend on the discretion of the local immigration office, as the extension is for a different visa purpose. Additionally, they inquire about the possibility of switching to a 90-day Non-O visa for being a father to a Thai child, including financial requirements for the application.

Looking at this from another angle, a few months ago Tod advised me "You could go to a thai consulate in a nearby country and get a 90 day Non-O visa based on being the father of a thai child by using the birth certificate, the mothers i/d and house book and showing 400K baht in a thai bank account in your name only (or the equivalent in an account in your country)". Would it be possible to do this when my Non-Imm 'B' is ready to expire? I am not yet legally married to my child's mother but we all live together. If this is possible, what about Section 4 of the Supporting Documents section on the e-visa application for Vientiane Thai Consulate where it states: "Financial evidence showing monthly income of no less than 40,000 THB or having the current balance of 400,000 THB (e.g., bank statements for the last three months, sponsor letter)"? I would be able to show 400,000THB when I submit the e-visa application, but not in my bank for the last three months of bank statements. Has anyone had recent success in getting a 90-day Non-Imm O visa for a Thai child dependant, and did they have to show 400,000THB in their bank for 3 months up to the date they applied, or just in their account at the time they applied?

Very useful info, Tod. Many thanks. Wasn't aware they could refuse it if the visa is for a different reason or that it starts on the day you apply since it is for a different reason. Might have to look at other options such as a tourist visa from a local consulate or a simple exit/re-entry (presumably by air?)

That's going to be between you and the immigration office you deal with so you're going to have to go ask them.

They don't have to allow it and we're seeing more and more offices not allow it if you have an entry/visa that is not for the same reason (thai family)

Also if they do allow it, because it's for a completely different reason than you got the visa for as a general rule the extension would start the day you applied, not be added to your current 90 day expiration date <- so if you can do it you should apply close to when your current stamp is running out or you'll lose the days on it

even if you get the 60 day extension you wouldn't be able to use that Non-B for your new employment (Non-B's are employer specific), you'd have to exit/re-enter and either apply for a new Non-B inside the country or exit and go get a new Non-B at a thai consulate outside

Check with your immigration office to see if you can get it, here's a list of general requirements (which should get you in the ball park documentation-wise if you can)
