Can I apply for a 1-year extension on my expiring UK passport and transfer the extension to my new passport in Thailand?

Hi, I can't find this answered in the list of topics so here goes. I've been in Thailand 26 years and I am on a 1-year extension based on married to a Thai + Work Permit. Permission to stay is due for renewal on 5 August. Foolishly, because I almost never use it, I've only just realised that my UK passport expires in February next year. Question: can I apply for a 1-year extension on my expiring passport and transfer the stamp(s) to my new passport when I get it. The danger if I apply for a new passport now is that it won't arrive in time and the UK policy is that the old passport is cancelled upon receipt of the application for a new one... Thanks in advance for any guidance.

TLDR : Answer Summary
The user, who has lived in Thailand for 26 years, is seeking advice on whether they can apply for a 1-year visa extension using their expiring UK passport, which is due for renewal soon. They are concerned about potential issues with applying for a new passport while their current extension is due for renewal. Responses confirm that it's possible to apply for the extension on the current passport, and visa stamps can be transferred to the new passport upon its arrival. However, the new visa extension will only be valid until the expiration of the current passport.

Looks like the O/P has their answers. Either apply for a new passport and hope they get it before their current extension runs out, OR wait it out apply for their extension on this passport and get it granted until Feb 2022. THEN in Feb apply for a new yearly extension.

Those are the two choices. Good luck with it :)

I'm in Chiang Mai.

My new UK passport took less than 3 weeks to arrive.

Transfer visa was a piece of cake.

Nobody can say how long you would wait. One guy said he waited for one month and still was told one more month to arrive - report this April. I wouldn't assure you it's would be just a few weeks such easily.

Decision is yours as you already did,

3 weeks would work for me, but 10 really doesn't. Not worth the risk... but 10 weeks is a crazy turnaround time for a replacement passport.

from many reports on here and other forums it seems like the UK passport turn around is around 2 weeks. I guess they’re bored in the office these days as no one is traveling. The website says 10 weeks to cover their arse, but my guess is you’d get it by mid July if you apply now.

Thanks but that feels like cutting it so fine. If it doesn't turn up in time to do my renewal around 4 August, as far as I understand it I would not be able to use the old one at immigration. Am I right on that?

you are right you wouldn’t be able to use the old one, and if it was delayed then you’d fall into overstay until the new one arrived. You have to balance up the odds of getting it back in time versus getting an extension until February and then applying for another then. I know I’d risk it as there’s around 7 weeks to go, but it’s your call. If you’d feel safer go for the extension now and then apply for the new passport.

and some workaround idea when it doesn't arrive on time is in the post I referred above.

When I renewed UK passport 2 years ago, they did not cancel my current one until the new one arrived and only photocopies were sent with the application so unless that has changed the guys in Trendy building will not do any cancel until the new one arrives and you should have time to do the whole process before August

yes they will transfer everything over to your new passport, but the extension of stay, stays the same, to the end of your old passport.

Yes you can. However...

A one year extension of stay based on marriage is valid for either one year, OR the length of your passport, whichever is less. If you apply for a new one year extension of stay based on marriage before August 5 and before you get a new passport, your new one year extension of stay based on marriage will be valid until February of next year.

>the old passport is cancelled upon receipt of the application for a new one

That's (probably) true, however the extension of stays are NOT cancelled, since they are issued by the Thai government.

Many thanks for fast reply and all understood. Given that UK passports are now taking up to 10 weeks to renew, it looks like I'll have to go for the shorter length of extension. A further question - while my extension of stay is based on marriage, it is also based on my work permit/earnings in Thailand. In the scenario above, do you know if my WP would also be limited to the validity of my passport, or would WP and extension end up being staggered by several months?

As far as I understand, WP is not limited by passport validity or your extesion. Extension and WP don't have to have the same date. But there is (or might be) a condition regarding the remaining period (xx months) or similar (and could be each other of WP and extension). Better to check your local labor office.

Sadly, that's a question you'd have to ask to the labor office.
