TLDR : Answer Summary
Freelance English tutors working on platforms like Preply may qualify for the DTV visa based on discussions in the community. Several members pointed out that others in similar situations have successfully applied for the visa, claiming it falls under the soft power category. It's essential that the students do not reside in Thailand and the tutor can demonstrate the ability to work remotely from abroad.
As a remote worker I do not see why not. I have a pal that was going to apply doing this when his current visa expires. He has contracts with a Japanese and Viet school/company
thanks. This company, Preply, specifically is actually a freelance site, where I’d be classified as a contractor, not actual employee. Not sure how this would work with the HR form the embassy asks for when proving employment….
Apply as a Freelancer and use Preply as part of your portfolio of work. Research a bit which Embassies are fine with freelance portfolios. As long as you are teaching outside Thailand I see no reason why you would not qualify as a freelance remote worker? To me it fits exactly what they were lookijg for in terms of remote worker. Good luck.
thanks again. Lastly, wouldn’t i just apply online? Not sure what you mean on the embassy research part. I am an American, if that makes a difference in what to do.
You do apply online but you need to be in the location to which you are applying. If you are in the USA then do some research regarding the requirements of the embassy or Consulates there. They may ask for tax returns etc as proof of online work and paying taxes. Some people travel out to Asia and apply in a country closer to Thailand rather than home country. Just do whatever works best but try and find out the local requirements. There is a set of requirents but these might be practiced differently in different locations. An example could be the 500k THB capital. Some Embassies accept the money if it has been in a day while others want to see a few months transactions. Do some search in this and other groups for the specific location you will apply. If anything not clear ask if anyone else has experience in that location.
further to what Greg said, forinstance the US has 3 consulates, each covering a jurisdiction depending on where you live, so you must apply at the correct one and prove your current location.
