Can I do in-person work in Thailand on a Digital Nomad Visa (DTV)?

DTV question:

This word that’s being thrown around ‘freelance’, someone working for themselves… does this include in-person work within Thailand aswell as online?

If I applied for the DTV visa with an online coaching portfolio and all the other stuff they need, could I then come to Thailand and ALSO do in-person personal training and be legal or would I still need to go down the work permit route.

Thank you in advance 🙏

TLDR : Answer Summary
The Digital Nomad Visa (DTV) strictly prohibits work within Thailand. While it allows remote work for clients outside the country, any in-person work, such as personal training for clients in Thailand, would require a separate work permit. Therefore, if you apply for the DTV, you cannot legally conduct any work activities in Thailand for Thai customers.

No, you cannot provide services domestically in Thailand on a DTV. Your customers must be abroad exclusively.

The rules are pretty clear. It is for remote work, that is work outside Thailand. It's not possible to work inside Thailand or to service thai clients

okay got it🙏

No. DTV is strictly work prohibited. You cannot get a work permit and you cannot do work in Thailand for Thai companies or with customers in Thailand.

The visa has writing on it that says it is work prohibited.

the worry is, if people start re-interpreting what "not working in Thailand" means, it won't be long before the DTV will get tightened up.

I'm guessing you can't do online work with people who are in Thailand.

really? I can see the logic but I imagine the nuances aren’t that deep?…🤷‍♂️

surely working online with people in Thailand whilst living in thailand, you need a work permit. Thought visa says cannot work in Thailand.

if I’m a digital nomad, the location of my online clientele shouldn’t be of any relevance I would’ve thought

Brandon's explained already. But you seem convinced it's ok to work online with Thai customers.

He won't listen.

The Visa prohibits work in Thailand, regardless of who and where the cliental are located

The best I can offer you is it is doing work remotely from home that could not otherwise be done in person in Thailand. So if all you are doing is interacting with Thai people in Bangkok via internet, which you could do in person, under Thai work permit, then it wouldn’t count.

@John ******
so you’re saying I couldn’t interact/work with someone in Bangkok over the internet? Not that I really care my clientele are mostly in the UK but just to make sure I know all the details👍

also, I believe one or two others had to supply list of clients and letters/details from them. So if you have clients form Europe, you can give their details instead

- I would defer you to ask the embassy what they think, when you apply and see what their thoughts are. That is your best option for getting an accurate answer. Would a farang who ran an online store in Thailand also be eligible, since they are interacting only online? Would an office employee who worked from home (not from office in Bangkok) also be eligible because they called into meetings? My humble opinion (you need to ask when applying) is the DTV isn’t meant to circumvent Thai labor laws but to bring in new people who wouldn’t have been subjected to Thai labor laws

correct about what?

correct about the fact you can only work online/remotely for clients outside of Thailand. You can not service clients inside Thailand on the DTV

not legally if you're in Thailand, because then you're working in Thailand without a work permit. If you're in your home country then sure.
