TLDR : Answer Summary
The DTV visa specifically allows remote work for non-Thai entities, meaning you can work for a foreign company but cannot engage in activities directly in Thailand such as a home catering business, especially if it involves Thai clients. This visa is designed primarily for digital nomads, intending to promote tourism rather than business operations in Thailand. Additionally, if someone plans to stay in Thailand for over 180 days in a year, their income may be subject to local taxes depending on its source.

do you have to pay tax on your remote work with a dtv visa?

@Dane *****
probably best to start your own new post asking the question

@Dane *****
if you stay in Thailand 180 days or more per calendar year, any monies you bring into Thailand are subject to taxation depending on their source. Thailand is considering taxing worldwide income, but there is nothing official yet.

DTV is a tourist visa

no, technically it is not.

Explain how it is not a tourist visa. It's not a work visa. You cannot work for a Thai company, establish a business, pay taxes, establish residence rights, open a bank account (irrespective of people fooling naive bank workers), it cannot be converted into another type of visa, it cannot be renewed in-country (for a further 5 years). Even the Thai government says it's part of a programme to expand tourism in the Kingdom.

it can be renewed in-country for another 6 months. It’s not a tourist visa because that’s not its intended purpose (despite what someone in the government says.) It most closely resembles a digital nomad visa, which many countries have introduced.

@Terry *******
You cannot renew it for another 5 years from within Thailand. It's a 5 year tourist visa that allows 185 days per entry. When you extend the entry, you are NOT reapplying for a new visa, you already have a visa, valid for 5 years. It's intended purpose is to make money for Thailand. It's effect might be to enable you to run an online business, learn to cook an egg, have dental treatment as a medical tourist, but that's not It's purpose. And digital nomad stuff is just millennial nonsense. They really mean homeless people with money. Or maybe no money judging from some queries.

you are correct that I misspoke and meant “extended” in-country. But you clearly don’t know anything about digital nomads. I know of many that have made millions.

@Terry *******
You misconstrued. And the ones making millions aren't faffing around from the back of their Lear jet on a cut price DTV. They can live where they like when they like, even though they are technically homeless. Your use of "clearly" shows you clearly spend too much time on SM as this used in a standard put down. Millions of baht isn't all that much.

No

If it is a virtual catering and you can sell it online and people bite the screen then certainly yes
John *******
Nope, it is a digital nomad visa. You are allowed to continue the work that you would be doing wherever you would have if you had stayed out of Thailand.

DTV is for REMOTE work only. You cannot do ANY work in Thailand, and you CANNOT have any Thai clients.
