What are the best visa options for staying in Thailand for 6 months?

Good day. I am asking for a friend. He wants to come here for 6 months.

I think I am right in telling him that there isn't a straight 6 months visa where he just comes and stays.

From what I understand it's a METV( Multi entry tourist visa) where he comes and goes after 60 and then returns for another 60 days.

I stand corrected if I am wrong.

If this is what he needs this would need to be done in the UK online.

Any assistance would be greatly appreciated., 👍🙏

TLDR : Answer Summary
A traveler seeking to stay in Thailand for 6 months cannot obtain a straightforward 6-month visa. Instead, options include a Multi-Entry Tourist Visa (METV), which allows for a maximum stay of 90 days (60 days initially plus a 30-day extension) per entry. The traveler can leave Thailand and re-enter to renew their stay. Alternatively, they could enter Thailand under a visa exemption for 60 days and then apply for a 30-day extension. Regular departures to neighboring countries (such as Vietnam) can facilitate this process. However, the METV is considered a more organized option, especially for those who prefer less complicated paperwork.

Interesting, I stayed in pattaya for almost 60 days, flew out to malaysia for about 5 days, returning through don mueng, felt it wasn't a given they were going to let me back in...called a supervisor over before stamping me in for another 60 days, even though I was staying only another week or so...

PS make sure all docs are in order when you apply and you should get it about 5 days after applying check email daily because they may ask for some other doc i got knocked back because i didnt send my full flight details this was the only request I had for more info so make sure it shows your arrival flight your name flight number etc. and same for the return flight date name flight number

Thats the visa I have just had you apply for the metv do it about two weeks before coming. When its approved that is the day the 6 months starts so this is what you do say the visa is approved on the 10th Sept (expires 8th Mar) but you arrive on the 20th that is your first day 60 days later is the day you have to leave so lets say its a 30 day month you will leave no later than 18th Nov then when you come back lets say you stay over for two days and come back on the 21st this is the first day of your second 60 days and you need to leave sometime during 19th Jan lets say you stay 2 days again and return on the 21st this is the first day of your 3rd 60 days but your visa expires before the 60 days are up after 47 days on the 8th Mar leave on the 5th or 6th come back 7th get another 60 days.

This is what I did thanks to Tod's advice no problems.come back on the 5th, 6th, 7th No later than 8th and you are here until 3rd, 4th, 5th, 6th May depending what day you came back. After 6th your are overstay/illegal

METV is your best bet, just done mine, landed in Thailand 10 days ago. Relatively straightforward process. Gives you 90 day continual stay (60 +30). If you leave and re enter on final day of visa you get additional 90 days,so 9 months in total.

ok thanks, so say after 2 months he goes out for a month then comes back he would then get 90 days again. So let's say 60 days in Thailand 30 days in Vietnam then come back into Thailand would he get 90 days again

@Gerald *******
Yes, each entry during the validity of the visa gives you 90 days (60+30)

Yes as Brandon explained above

That's what he's doing at the moment, he's off to Vietnam next week for a month. But he thought he could get a 6 month visa. So at present the 60 day visa exempt is still in force. So just say next year it's still 60 days he could do a border run from Hua Hin. But I think the METV is his best bet knowing how he is with paperwork

@Gerald *******
Yes. Though Hua Hin isn't exactly well situation for border bounces. Closest land border would probably be the boat crossing into Myanmar at Ranong/Kawthoung. Probably easier for him to fly somewhere especially if he wants to take a mini-vacation. Both Kualar Lumpur and Singapore have visa-free entry. Taiwan, Hong Kong, and even Korea and Japan aren't too far off.

To fly he needs to go back up the Bangkok, as Hua Hin airport at the moment is only flying to Chiang Mai

border runs from On Nut go Cambodia return same day. That's probably easiest option guaranteed atamp in

@Jim **********
those have been halted for months already. No one knows when they'll resume. The border with Cambodia is closed due to the conflict. They've been doing overnight drives to Laos lately. I'd much rather go to Bangkok and get a flight than spend 18-24 hours in a van.

@Brandon ***********
OK wasn't aware. I live Hua Hin and in past before on O visa this was my best option
Brandon ************
@Gerald *******
yes, but that's closer to any other border.

He's off to Vietnam next week then back for the last 4 weeks of his holiday

@Gerald *******
if in Hua Hin there’s also the option of getting the train down to Malaysia as the track runs right through it. Or conversely, back up to Bangkok.

@Gerald *******
if he has history border bounce runs risk be denied entry. METV is safer option All depends amount TR stamps plus IO at airport.

No he's never done a border run it was just a thought.

@Gerald *******
thought he's doing border bounce now ? U said he's going Vietnam...

I think u do the 60days...then extend 30days, then leave thialand & return with another 60days + 30 day extension, it makes no seanse as you can do that without the METV, altho it will probably give u peace of mind as I think your re-entrys are kinda guaranteed... holding the METV...I maybe wrong, im sure I will be corrected if so... 🧐
Brandon ************
An METV does work that way, but he could also apply for a 30-day extension each time, meaning 90 days + 90 days.

Although if your friend has not been in Thailand recently, and will not be staying beyond 6 months, he would probably be fine just arriving visa exempt (60 days) and then applying for the 30 day tourist extension. Leave Thailand, go somewhere for a few days (not actually required, he could return immediately, but why not enjoy the region if you're here already?) and then when he returns he gets another 60 day visa exempt stamp, +30 day extension before returning home.

Visa exempt is not a good option for staying long-term, as you're likely go run afoul of immigration, but if it's just 2 entries, without a long history of being in Thailand and not trying to stay too long, it's probably okay.

does a multi entry guarantee entry , even if you have used visa exemption a lot recently ( I done seven months in last twelve on visa exemption)
Brandon ************
@Sean ****
nothing ever guarantees entry except for a Thai passport. There are reports of people with multiple entry tourist visa being warned. Tourist entry is tourist entry, whether it's visa exempt, single entry tourist, or multiple entry tourist. None of them are intended for long term stay in Thailand.
