Can I switch from an O-A visa to an O visa in Thailand after marriage and will I need health insurance thereafter?

I will be applying for an O-A visa (over 50 with sufficient funds) from the UK embassy soon and now obviously will have to have health insurance (costing me circa 50,000 a year).

Question one: if i marry my Thai gf when i come back to Thailand (we have been together now for 20 years) can i change the O-A into an O visa while in Thailand?

Question two: - will i then not need to purchase any more health insurance in future years? (Until rules change again).

TLDR : Answer Summary
The post discusses the inquiry about converting an O-A visa (for individuals over 50 with sufficient funds) to an O visa after getting married in Thailand. The author also questions whether they will need to continue buying health insurance after the marriage. Comments provide varying advice, suggesting that marrying a Thai national might allow the switch to an O visa without the need for health insurance in future years, but caution is advised as rules may change.

And before things really go out of hand, I close the commenting. Keep it nice and polite, even if you do not like or even hate Thailand and their Immigration rules and regulations.

well I am sure there will be many people caught out and not let in and probably those issued before may struggle as it is up to immigration at end of day so better to arrange it to prevent issues.

Ed Alchin then take it up with the London Thai Embassy and the E visa application site.

Good luck with it.

I'm done commenting on any of it. It's like talking to idiots.

And it seems that every topic at the moment ends up in Insurance companies conditions, ranting about Governments and any kind of visa advice is down the drain, I start closing it. Sorry, but for ranting about all you want this is not the place. If you have any questions about the new requirement of health insurance for the Non Immigrant O-A visa feel free to use this topic:

Getting married, does not give you any health cover unless your married to a Thai government worker.

Even then, nobody can say if that is acceptable or not

If you plan to marry I would not apply for O-A. Just come as Tourist, get married and apply Non O in HCMC or Savannakhet.

it becomes a game when the whole point revolves around trying to get around any legislation put in place. Last week, the advice was to get the O-A visa, this week it isn't liked anymore. Then guess what? Yes, more loophole closures and more legislation.

The advice should be to get an extension. That puts a stop to peoples doubts of the whole situation.

Yes, the Thailand Elite visa works. Now we are seeing problems with running in to the 6th year and is it actually legal.

The very biggest problem and cause of 99% of these visa issue's is social media. Every scam and work around is online for the Authorities to see.

They talk about intelligence and AI technology. All this Thai government need is Facebook and the Thai Visa forum. 🤔

it is not a game, these are legal options. BTW I fully support Elite Visa, much better than all other BS out there. Or you consider this a game too?

he has sufficient funds, so why not apply in thailand better, so he can stay and just do 90 day reporting?

? If you're married, you still need the border run after 90 days? i think not. only 90 day reporting.

The Non Immigrant O is in single entry for 90 days or multiple entry for 1 year which give you sections of 90 days stay

+1 as above as you will save on the insurance, only issue is 90 border bounce instead of 90 day reporting.

month income and now pay ฿4500 mth for health insurance.

Insurance companies too much sway in political circles methinks.

I might just get 1 year comprehensive travel insurance bound to be cheaper

are you in an area where there is an Expats Club? If so check to see if they have a group health insurance plan available for its members. I am not sure but it may meet the minimum requirements of the O-A visa. Just brainstorming options.

You probably have it correct in your thoughts. But to not have health insurance in Thailand is foolish IMHO. Good Luck.
