Hi there. I'm asking for advice for a friend,as he's not online very often, etc. 'I went to open a Bank Account today and they won’t let me unless I have a “Long Term X-O Visa. It now seems I can’t apply for it unless I am physically in the U.K. ?
Is this correct? He's currently in Nong Kae with his Thai partner and son. They're not married yet. But I'm asking on his behalf as he's got no idea what he needs to do next. Thank you. 🙏
TLDR : Answer Summary
To open a bank account in Thailand, your friend needs to have a long-term visa—typically a non-O visa. This visa can be applied for from outside Thailand, so he may need to travel to a neighboring country like Laos or Vietnam to obtain it. Once he has the non-O visa, he can return to Thailand and open a bank account, as banks now require long-term visas for account opening. The process can vary by bank branch, and it is advisable to visit multiple branches if the first one imposes strict rules. It's also worth noting that he cannot open a bank account as a tourist.
