Would you recommend doing the paperwork myself or is it better to have an agency assist with this process?

I am an American, I am married to a Thai National and we live in Udon Thani. I am looking at retiring and living in Udon, and trying to find the best way to not really have to worry about visa's. So is getting my residency a better way to go? or is it really impossible to get?
