TLDR : Answer Summary
The discussion begins with a query about the validity of a potential ten-year visa being approved by the Thai government. Several comments provide insights into visa options like the Non-O visa and the process of obtaining residency. Key requirements mentioned include financial thresholds based on marriage (400,000 THB in a Thai bank) or retirement (800,000 THB), along with the necessity of extensions and regular reporting to Immigration. Some participants suggest looking into permanent residency, but emphasize that it typically requires prior legal work experience in Thailand. The conversation reflects a mix of advice on handling visa applications and the complexities around obtaining long-term residency.

Perhaps apply directly for citizenship is easier. You need to work, pay taxes, make all the residence duration anyway. Give it 5 years to prepare to apply, meanwhile learn Thai. Give 5000 baht to Charity every year and get receipts. I support the Girl Guides of Thailand.

Patriarchal rules in Thailand? No.......

As a foreign male married to a thai female you can indeed apply directly for thai citizenship without having gotten permanent residence granted first BUT you have to have worked here legally on unbroken extensions of stays (not multi-entry visas where you border bounce every 90 days) with a valid work permit for 5 years, paid taxes, filed income tax, etc, and been married to your spouse that time.

As far as the know thai part, that's almost not even a factor anymore. It only gives you a maximum 15 points and I know people who can't string 6 words of thai together yet hold thai citizenship because they scored high enough in the other categories to outweigh their sucky thai.

Okay the rules for foreign females married to thai males and foreign males married to thai females are completely different on applying directly for citizenship.

I'm not sure I heard many female spouse of Thais go this route. Different rules for men?

Residency is not impossible but not easy and take some time to get. You can apply for the Non Immigrant O visa and than do yearly an Extension of Stay at Immigration. Based on marriage you need 400.000 Thb on own Thai Bank account or 40.000 Thb monthly income statement from your Embassy. If based on retirement you need 800.000 Thb on own bankaccount or 65.000 Thb income statement from your Embassy or a combination of these two not less than 800.000 Thb. With the Extension of Stay you only need to report every 90 days at Immigration by mail, internet or in person and need a re-entry permit if you like to travel abroad.

I am an American, I am married to a Thai National and we live in Udon Thani. I am looking at retiring and living in Udon, and trying to find the best way to not really have to worry about visa's. So is getting my residency a better way to go? or is it really impossible to get?

you are being overly sensitive :/ As a rule that website you linked to is bad, plain and simple. It has a LOT of bad information on it AND it is nothing more than a front for a visa agency inside the country to get visas and extensions for people. Seeing as we don't allow the recommendation of visa agencies on the group, we don't allow links to that site.

No matter what you believe, it's nothing to do with you.
Søren ********
@Tod ********
And the other links are describing the same way, so they are all lying, even the Lawyers who also post different ways to get it. Sorry I shall stop helping peop0le with their wishes. 2 days, and 2 warnings.
Tod *********
@Søren *******
Just that link has bad information. There are HUNDREDS of sites that have accurate information about the permanent residency process and hundreds of posts by people who have gotten it granted.

That website is a bad one to reference.
Søren ********
@Tod ********
There are more than 20 other sites Tod. Guess that at least one of them are giving the truth. It can not only be this group that have the truth. Or can it ?????
Tod *********
Nope,
@Søren *******
m it's nothing to do with you.

That website you linked to is terrible is all.

Every time it's ever posted on here it has false information on what it's talking about. Myself and the other admins delete the links as fast as people post them. it's just not a good resource for information :/

Unfortunately there are only so many ways to qualify for permanent residency and they involve working here legally with a work permit, paying taxes, filing taxes etc..
Tod *********
@Will ********
, unless you're legally working here inside the country with a valid work permit you are looking at yearly extensions like you have now, either based on marriage to a thai or on being over 50 (retirement).
Søren ********
@Tod ********
Sorry Tod. Is it again aggression from me, or just try to search How to qualify for permanent residency in Thailand. So many options, and all of them Thai. But now i am in an aggression again. Sorry for helping your members.

I do have the Thai marriage visa and a METV already. it is due to be renewed in November. I am just looking down the road at what is the best way to go.

@Will ********
, apply for a 90 day Non-Immigrant Type O (o means other) visa based o marriage from a thai consulate in your country before you come here, then apply for the yearly extension of stay at the immigration office once you're here.

I am not retired yet, i am still working abroad. i have a wife and 2 children living in Udon Thani, i still have about 6 years till retirement.
Søren ********
@Will ********
I guess that you can do it by yourself, and save a lot of money that way. And every Immigration Office will be helpful to you. Or get a Lawyer to do it, still cheaper than a Visa Shop.
Tod *********
@***
, Being retired here and not legally working for the requisite time means he couldn't qualify for permanent residency.

@Søren *******
thank you this was very helpful. 👍👍👍👍👍👍
Tod *********
you are not going to ever qualify for permanent residency being retired here. It requires working legally here for x number of years, paying taxes, filing income tax etc.

You are married to a thai, come here, get a 90 day Non-O visa based on marriage and extend that every year by meeting the financial requirements.

This is the Non Immigrant O-X visa, this are the conditions from the Thai Embassy in the Netherlands. It could be different in your country, just check their website:
