Can I enter Thailand on a 30-day visa exemption if I only stay for 17 days?

I did it 25 years ago and it was no problem then and now there's the Internet at your fingertips now...more hotels and transportation...you'll get your visa when you land bkk...I thought I'd travel for 6 months, ended doing almost 10 years and I still go back 2-3 times a year.

Is it illegal for a motorcycle rental shop in Thailand to keep my passport as a deposit?

They used to do this in phuket, when you took the bike back they'd say you damaged or scratch it,pay to fix or no passport.
