Can i ask are you able to buy a single flight to Thailand? I am unsure how long I want to stay .Would immigration refuse me entry without a confirmed return flight ?.The last time I visited i wanted to stay longer but to change my return flight date cost nearly as much as a single fare back ..Thanks in advance
Answer summary
Travelers contemplating entry to Thailand often wonder about the necessity of having a confirmed return flight. Experiences vary among expats regarding airline policies versus immigration checks. While some travelers report successfully entering Thailand on a one-way ticket, many caution that airlines typically require proof of onward travel to avoid liability. Suggestions include booking a low-cost bus or train ticket to a neighboring country, or using services that provide verifiable onward tickets, often termed 'dummy tickets'. Ultimately, having a return or onward ticket can mitigate issues both at the airline check-in and with Thai immigration officers.

Unfortunately for tourist exempt visa it's almost 100% sure that you will be asked for onward ticket. It doesn't have to be a return ticket. You can just buy a single to a nearby country or a throwaway ticket though I've never tried that yet. For the small layout it could save a lot of hassle. Just make sure the date of the ticket falls within your visa exempt dates.
John *******

Most airlines won't check you in unless you have an outward bound within your Visa even Visa exempt. So that means you're better as said previously booking a cheap flight to neighbouring countries within the 60 days. The airline are more worried that if you are refused entry. It's their responsibility to fly you back to where you boarded.

From Google AI:

An onward ticket (or proof of onward travel) is a booked flight out of a destination country, often required for one-way travelers to satisfy immigration and airlines. Temporary, legitimate, and verifiable, services like OnwardTicket, BestOnwardTicket, and OneWayFly rent these tickets for 48+ hours for roughly $12–$16, featuring a valid PNR.

Key Aspects of Onward Tickets:

- What is it? A legitimate, temporary reservation that shows when you will leave the country, preventing issues at check-in or customs.

- How it Works: You receive a PDF with a PNR (Passenger Name Record) code that can be verified on the airline's official website during the validity period (usually 48 hours to 14 days).

- Why Use It? It is faster and cheaper than buying a fully refundable, high-priced return flight just for compliance.

- Where to Get One: Services such as OnwardTicket, BestOnwardTicket, and OneWayFly provide this service specifically for visa applications or immigration control.

Alternative Methods: You can also purchase a real refundable ticket, a cheap bus/train ticket, or book a flight to a neighboring country to satisfy the requirement.

Important Considerations:

- Ensure the ticket remains active for at least 48 hours to pass through immigration without issue.

- The ticket is for documentation only; it is not a boarding pass.

Actually what you can do is just buy a bus ticket from Nong Khai to Vientiane or from Hat Yai to Malaysia for something like 200 baht on One 2 Go.

That's what I did when I last entered the country last month and I was refused entry without a departure ticket (I was on a visa run and had to leave to come back in on a tourist exemption stamp).

So you could do that and that will save you paying 50USD plus on having to buy another flight ticket.

It's the responsibility of the airline as they can be fined for allowing passengers on board without an outbound flight or the right types of visa that may exempt them. Some airlines are more pedantic than others so it pays to check. Possibly risk it and it's easy to buy an outbound flight at the counter if they call you out.

I am not here to discuss everyone's different expensive. This is general commentary of what is required, if people have been successful with only a one way ticket, that is wonderful, but be aware that at sometime in the future you maybe denied;

" proof of a return or onward ticket (within 30-60 days) to allow boarding for flights to Thailand, especially for visa-exempt travelers. While Thai immigration rarely asks for it, airlines are liable for returning passengers, making them strict on this requirement. "
