ORIGINAL POSTER
I have a 60 day tourist visa and am flying from Australia in May. I have booked my return ticket 84 days after arrival as I intend to ask for the 30 day extension stamp.

Q - Will Thai immigration have a problem with this ?

Q - Will DTAC have a problem with this ?

FYI for you constructive advice

TLDR : Answer Summary
A user has a 60-day tourist visa for Thailand and plans to return to Australia 84 days after arrival, intending to request a 30-day extension. They inquire if Thai immigration or the airline would pose problems due to the longer return ticket. Community responses highlight mixed experiences: some advise having a return ticket within the visa duration, while others suggest that extensions are commonly granted, thus showing a return ticket beyond the initial visa period may not raise issues. The consensus leans toward caution, suggesting pre-booking an exit ticket within the 60 days as a backup.

You have to have a flight leaving Thailand before 60day visa expires

We got caught with this in AUS they wouldn’t let us on plane we had to buy a ticket to KL then return to Thailand on a 30day

Dont change anything, complete your TDAC and ignore the return flight option, you can simply skip it, it doesnt have a red * next to it so you can leave it blank, ive literally just done it. At check in if theres any problems you wont get your boarding pass and will be asked for a return flight, at that point you can give them your return flight details to see if that works or you can book a quick cheap refundable onward ticket within the 60 days. Im 98% sure this wont happen but some airlines apply different rules, albeit incorrectly.

Nowadays most airlines will age to see a return ticket you may be lucky and they might not ask you

But if you have a problem on arrival immigration in Thailand regards the return ticket the Airline will be held responsible

Most airlines nowadays won’t take the risk.

Thai Immigration are looking at changing the 60 entry free back to 30 days very soon I’ve heard

Good luck 🤞

Cheers 🍻

For the Thai immigration officer at Entry, since you already have a SETV E–Visa PDF File and return ticket to exit out of Thailand, there should be no problems

on the TDAC [not DTAC], Thailand Digital Arrival Card Website, go ahead and put the Departure Date of your return flight out of Thailand

Did you really pay AUD $60 Dollars for the Thai E–Visa Fee to the Thai Embassy in Canberra, Thai Consulate in Sydney, or some other Thai Embassy/Consulate outside Thailand for a Single Entry Tourist E–Visa ( SETV ) PDF File or did you actually make Entry into Thailand on a Free Visa Exempt Stamp ( ผ.60–ม.17 )??

The fact OP puts the question shows he is doing something not 100% legal or complying with rules.

Seeking support on FB doesn’t change the fact, no matter if responses are the typical “done it too, never a problem”.

The IO going deep will not accept that as an excuse.

It is known that everywhere in the world, the IO has the ultimate word and decision, even with a correct visa.

The airlines know that and take responsibility. Again, the fact “never had a problem” it’s not a guideline.

OP has already decided to challenge the system. Now just looking for comfort.

Johnny Wansueb - no such thing as a 90 Visa in terms of the duration of stay.

A tourist Visa is issued with a validity window - usually 90 days. This gives the earliest possible entry date, and the latest possible entry date within which you can travel to Thailand.

Assuming you enter within the validity period, then an Entry Permit is stamped by the IO with the maximum permitted period of stay of 60 days from the date of entry. It is usually possible to extend the the Entry Permit.

I have just this visa for my upcoming journey from NZ.

Johnny Wansueb not blaming anyone - if they have you a 60days it's because that's the(ir) rule

Advice should be asked for at the embassy/consulate

FB groups are worth just the bytes they take on the web

You will get a lot of "yes, do it, no problem" for sure, a few "don't do it", some "worth the risk" but at the end of the day... it is all down to the IO at the immigration office who might have woken badly, to the IO at the booth who wants to apply the law, at the check in agent at origin point that reads the books and knows he/she can't release a boarding pass seen the papers you present.

What's you holiday worth to you ?

Mine is worth much more than the small amount to have a ticket out of country in the first 60 days .

It's clearly the rule.

I simply don't get why people don't just follow the rules?

25 years ,every winter never a issue

Because I follow there rules.

I have being.asked and I have seen people denied in the airport.

It's not immigration ...it's your airline on boarding

Robert Merrell A return ticket is not 'clearly the rule,' when will people learn!! Theres 193 countries in the world, every single passport is different, they dont have a one rule for all. I have travelled to thailand and philippines for decades on my uk passport. Philippines for my passport requires an onward ticket, thailand for my passport does not. I know many people who travel to Thailand on a one way ticket as well, again they have done it for years. I dont have a clue about any other passports as they are all different, but very likely the same rules apply, only people with those passports would know.

I have experienced some airlines applying the rules incorrectly as well, in one case they refused my check in and in that case i had no choice to get a quick throw away ticket. But thats once in close to 20 years of travel to the land of smiles.

For about $20 it is worth buying a throw away ticket from onwardticket.com that leaves within 60 days ( you need to book it within 48 hours of leaving for Thailand)

If you scare buy new cheapest ticket to Vietnam or any country to fly out within 60 days after arrival. Only to show and to forget it. Normally it is impossible to get TR60 e-visa if tickets not inside 60 days.

Hey might. Return should be 60 day. A changeable ticket is an option or using one of the online airline booking services that only gives you a flight confirmation and not an actual ticket

Johnny Wansueb yes. you have a 60 day tourist visa given on entry. then apply for a 30 extension in thailand. but people are booking their exit flight outside of the 60 day visa. they're booking their exit flight on the assumption the 30 day extension will be granted. its presumptuous and kind of disrespectful to their rules.

Larry Wheeler We do it the way you describe it every year for the last 4. It’s not disrespectful at all. The Thai immigration and the airlines understand this is what is required to stay in Thailand for 3 months. The only time people have trouble is when they try to skirt the Thai rules. This is a Thailand immigration rule and if you follow the rules, you will be able to stay.

John Nielson We have done this every year. The airlines know you can extend the visa another 30 days. Is there anyone answering this question ? That has actually done what the person is asking. We have for the last three years, and never a problem. Always a breeze at immigration and never a problem at YVR airport.

Norman Upton I’ve had a problem leaving YVR just a couple of months ago. I had to purchase a ticket out of Thailand before the 60 days was up. I’ve had the same issues leaving YHZ and YYZ.

Immigration won’t be the problem. It’s the airline agent checking you in that has the issues with it.

Check with the airline first then. This is our 3 rd or 4 year staying for 4 months ( 1 month in Vietnam). Only missed 2 years since 2014. Never had a problem, because we have a return ticket. Sitting at the Hyatt Bangkok. Vancouver bound tomorrow.

No, and No.

The AIRLINE cares, as, if you're somehow denied entry, they have to fly you right back.

If you paid for a return ticket, and are denied entry, it's just an inconvenience to them, but they're not out any ca$h.

If your ticket is one-way, they still have to fly you back, but then they have to try to collect from you.

Fwiw, late this past November I showed up for my flight. My return flight was 90 days in the future, and the Qatar agent, at check-in, asked me about it.

I told her I was getting an extension for the last 30 days. She walked to another agent, returned shortly, and processed me in.

On arrival, the IO never said a thing about it.

Alan Rothwell Oddly enough qatar are the only ones to ask me for a return ticket in decades of travel and i said no i dont need one as im unsure when i will leave. They listened and allowed me to travel. I travelled with qatar 3 times a year for several years once i discovered they were the best airline and worth the extra. And in all them journeys i was asked once only.
