Hello everyone, I’ve booked a return ticket to Thailand for a 63-day stay and am planning to apply for a tourist visa.

1. Will my tourist visa be approved if my return ticket is for 63 days?

2. Could I encounter any issues at the airport or with Thai immigration?

Has anyone had a similar experience? I’d really appreciate any advice. Thank you!
Answer summary
The main concern raised is whether a tourist visa can be approved for a 63-day stay in Thailand. Most responses indicate that the standard tourist visa permits a 60-day stay, but extensions are possible. Advice suggests carrying proof of onward travel to mitigate issues at immigration, and some users shared their successful experiences with visa extensions. However, there is caution against overstays, as it can lead to fines and complications with future entries.

Presuming you already have a 60 tourist visa? Book a cheap refundable flight to Cambodia or KL, then cancel the short flight and do a 30 day extension.

Why 63 days? You need to extend it for 1900 baht for only 3 days? Why not stay 60 days max ?

Dont go for the 500 baht over stay fine because you will get a stamp in your passport that you over stayed and if you come Thailand again you could get refused entry at immigration does not like over stayers and they are getting more and more strict on a lot of things in Thailand.

*** On a 60-days TOURIST VISA, the airline is NOT going to ask for an onward travel proof. They only ask that from passengers who fly without a visa.

*** for the application to a single-entry tourist visa, your return flight can be within 90 days (the embassy knows that you can extend the 60 days with 30 more days)

*** people who tell you that with 63 days you would run into overstay, are totally stooped. You can extend the 60 days with 30 more days on Immigration for 1900 Baht.

*** Don’t worry, Thai Immigration very rarely asks for your outbound travel. They only ask people who have had extended touristic stays inside Thailand, or who repeatedly enter visa-exempt

Not a problem apply for a 60 day single entry then you can go to immigration and get a 30 day extension if you not to sure how to get your 30 day extension at immigration go to a agent and they will do it for you for a little more cost .

Paul Franklin A stupid answer without arguments. You have no problem with 63 days, don't you need any ideas with boarderrun, with an extension of your own immigration (it's also expensive boy, you'll cost a lot of hours), no problems with the Entry, no question, absolutely serious. And then comes a comment like yours...... without words.

1 no you will be denied the SETV as your stay is 63 days

2. Only immigration can advise. Make sure you have the 5 things required for Entry

Several people had problems at the check-in desk because they had only applied for a tourist visa and their stay was more than 60 days. Buying a cheap flight out (not needing to use it) before 60 days are over helps.

And at the end of your stay you extend your visa. You need a hotel booking confirmation, passport pics, flight proof and 1900 Baht for it.

Country of Passport? You can apply for valid visa or an extension of stay. If not expect to pay a fine on departure.

You should be Ok, I stated 89 day and received my tourist visa.

This includes a 30 day extension from my local Immigration office, you should apply for an extension before your 60 days are up.

Yes, you will have a three day overstay of your permission to stay in the Kingdom. It is not a good thing to do and against the law. You can go to the Immigration Office near where you are staying and get an extension of your permission to stay. It will cost you ฿1,900. Your overstay will cost you ฿500 a day, so ฿1,500 and possibly an overstay stamp in your passport. Immigration is getting pretty particular about showing an exit out of the country within your allotted permission to stay for entry to the Kingdom, so a bus ticket or cheap flight to a nearby country, maybe a cancellable ticket, then get the extension.

OP
Jim McGowan Thank you for your advice. I’m planning to apply for an extension while staying in Bangkok. My main concern is whether I might encounter any issues with the airline when boarding or with Thai immigration when entering Thailand, as my return ticket is for 63 days.

HeartfeltLynx1745 *** On a 60-days TOURIST VISA, the airline is NOT going to ask for an onward travel proof. They only ask that from passengers who fly without a visa. DON'T listen to that stoopeed advice from Mister Gowan. . . and Thai Immigration is NOT interested in your onward travel. They, too, know very well that you can get the 30-days extension

Booking an onward ticket before your 60 days would eliminate that worry. I know, it's a real pain. Can you change your return flight date? I have done it a few times and it was usually less than $100USD but it depends on your airline and ticket regulations. Good luck! Last time I entered on visa exempt as I didn't have time to get a visa and my last 1 year retirement extension of permission to stay expired and I had booked my return flight for 90 days thinking I could get a 30 days extension at the least. It was in January this year when visa exempt was 60 days. They didn't like that and told me next time your Thai wife won't save you, get the proper visa. So I topped up my Thai bank account and now I have another one year extension of permission to stay with a re-entry stamp. No issues, I hope...

OP
Jim McGowan Thank you for sharing your experience! Unfortunately, changing the return flight dates would cost nearly £300 for our family of four, so getting an extension in Thailand would be much cheaper. I wish I could change the tickets, but it’s quite expensive for us.

I've had at least five 60-day tourist visas approved the last few years with ticket bookings for 89-90 days. Took about 10 days each (Stockholm embassy).

However thats not a bullet-proof way to enter, last time in februari this year I was questioned at the suvarnaphumi immigration counter which I was totally unprepared of! Maybe because my recent history of staying quite a long time on tourist visas.

OP
Matt Nilsson Thank you for sharing your experience! May I ask what questions the immigration officer asked you, and how did you answer them?

I really don’t want to change my return ticket to 60 days, as I’m planning to apply for an extension while staying in Bangkok. Do you think immigration would accept this explanation, or could I still have problems entering Thailand? I’d really appreciate your advice.

HeartfeltLynx1745 as others have pointed out, you shoud not face any problems IF you don't have a history of staying many months on tourist viasas/visa exempts the last say 12 months.

If you stumble on a rookie at the check-in counter, just explain the rules of extending for 30 more days at a local immigration office.

HeartfeltLynx1745 if Thai Immigration pulls you aside, it all depends on your previous 12-18 months touristic stays in Thailand. If you repeatedly stay, up from 180 days within a 1-year period, you are not a typical tourist
