So they also have blocked my bank account at Bangkok bank. Since Friday I started to get an error when I wanted to pay or withdraw money. I just went to their branch at koh Phangan and the lady said the bank is closing accounts on the dtv visa.

I did not get any notification only a error.
Answer summary
A user reported that their Bangkok Bank account was blocked without notification, citing a policy where accounts are closed for holders of the DTV visa. Various comments provided insights into similar experiences, indicating that banks in Thailand are enforcing policies that often disallow account openings or retention for certain visa types. Discussions suggest that issues can arise from inconsistencies in account and visa details, with advice ranging from withdrawing funds to transferring accounts to different banks.

The error is the notification.

Withdraw your funds and work around it. Multiple new QR code apps springing up weekly, wise offering a local banking-like system for DTV holders etc.

Before worrying that the bank froze the account because of a DTV visa, he should check for simpler causes. I once got locked out of the Bangkok Bank app and had to update my passport with my mobile carrier, then show the bank an updated phone statement. The mobile number must be registered under the same passport as the bank records. If his account details and phone registration do not match, that alone can trigger a suspension. Once corrected, the bank usually restores access. If he has a long standing with bank they may over look a change to a DTV visa.

I also renewed my Kasikorn credit card and the bank did not care what visa I was on. They only asked about my passport expiry date. When I mentioned the mobile number issue, the teller laughed and said, “Bangkok Bank, right?” That shows how common this problem is.

LongTimeLivingInThailand "long standing", the DTV is not even 2 years old, so pretty hard to have a long standing relationship with the bank. Also, the bank told them the reason, no need to think of any other possibilities.

he already told us he opened the account on an Ed Visa. Banks make mistakes. I had a banker tell me I couldn't open a new account on a retirement visa which is false. Once pushed they realized they were wrong and opened an account for me.

entirely up to the bank.

If you appear like a tourist, they will likely want to close it, if you seem established, have a lot in the bank, own a condo, maybe married or even long term partner.. They will often allow it to remain.

There is no law, only bank discretion.

there are others allowed. Privilege and Non O-A.

Basically anything that is not a tourist visa, which the DTV visa is.

The Bank of Thailand stipulated last year that those on tourist visas could not open or retain bank accounts. But you can withdraw your money

yeah it does not work like that. Anyone with bkk bank is screwed. I still have my account and I opened it by myself without an agent. No problems or worries. Ed visas are only good for a year. People that never used bkk bank or an agent seem to be in a better position.
