Why can't I renew my Bangkok Bank ATM card if I'm on a DTV visa?

Finally happened to me 🤷🏻‍♂️

Have a Bangkok Bank account for 5+ years. My ATM card expired 08/2026 so I went to a Bangkok Bank branch to get a new ATM card and I was denied because I’m on a DTV visa.

They showed me a June 2026 notice letter from Bangkok Bank head office stating that foreigners on DTV cannot open a new account OR get a new ATM card once the card is expired.

Incredible… they do everything to make our life difficult and discourage us from spending our money in Thailand…
Answer summary
The user shares their experience of being denied a renewal for their bank ATM card at Bangkok Bank due to being on a DTV visa. Discussions among commenters reveal that the restriction on renewing cards for DTV visa holders appears to be based on bank policy influenced by government regulations targeting foreigners. Multiple commenters suggest alternatives like using cardless ATMs or switching to other banks that are more accommodating, indicating that this issue has been affecting many expats.

No, the law specifically states you can't have an account on that visa and always has. You broke the rules so you pay the price. Only yourself to blame.

Dtv is not a permanent stay visa, you cannot work on dtv visa hence why you cannot have a bank account. It make sense but too many people abuse visas to work in thailand.

Tourists are not allowed to open bank accounts in Thailand. It is a hassle to some extent but it's their policy.

It is your own choice to live as a tourist in Thailand, and therefore having some banking restrictions, nothing incredible on that.

Normally tourists are perfectly able to spend their money in a country without having a local bank account, so nothing to do with discouraging spendings, a bank account does not make you spend anymore.

Can't see this DTV lasting much longer.

You can't do workcation unless you meet certain unwritten rules.

You can't use soft power unless you cook or box for an uncertain length of time.

You have to sit home whilst it's processed, yet you are already supposed to be a digital nomad.

You can't bank, but can stay almost permanently for 5 years😅

What a system, lol.

Don’t reset your phone or buy a new phone because then the system will tell you in order to log in, you need to go to the branch and at the branch they will tell they can’t do anything because you are on DTV.

That happened to me in late July / August at Bangkok bank.

Luckily my card will expire in 2030. So I can still use my card but no phone app.

They said whatever you need to update (passport, card, phone app, codes, passbook) your account will be frozen. So the bank employee will just do nothing in order to keep your account alive until you can.

People assume it’s a visa issue, but legally there is zero law prohibiting DTV holders from opening accounts (or renewing ATM cards). It's purely internal bank policy driven by heavy-handed KYC/AML rules. Banks moved the goalposts recently, and combined with Foreign Affairs dropping sudden DTV visa requirement changes, the constant flip-flopping just destroys confidence for everyone involved.

TrustyGol*********
TrustyGol*********
@Andrew ******
there was no logic. It wasn't an issue until the scammers came in. But that's why you can't get one on a tourist visa now either.
Jay **********
Jay **********
TrustyGoldfish9051 it also makes it more difficult to spend it 🤷🏼‍♀️

If anything, it'd make it easier to CATCH someone working illegally. Patterns like selling stuff, consistent deposits from a local company, etc. If someone was stupid enough to work here illegally and filter it through their Thai bank, it'd be easier to identify them.
TrustyGol*********
TrustyGol*********
@Jay *********
no, believe it or not the government can't just pull up your banking records on a screen. There are in fact data protection laws that prevent them for doing this. The government and your government do however get a balance tied to your name at the end of the year but that's it. It's a balance nit Individual transactions
Jay **********
Jay **********
TrustyGoldfish9051 And yet they set this one up in a way that allows people to spend the majority of the year here, and to allow collecting remote income while here. Even without the need to leave the country over a 6 month period- many living here half of the year or more, which they welcome people to do, sure is more convenient to allow then to keep their money over here. It's a win for them economically.

I don't personally have a horse in this race, as I've lived here most of my adult life and have had a bank account almost 20 years. But I just wish Thailand would find a better solution for people who are just arriving with capital to spend, and there should be a convenient way for them to spend it. I guess the new "Pay Like A Local" initiative is their current answer to that, but I still think it could be better.
TrustyGol*********
TrustyGol*********
@Jay *********
or they can make it simpler and say no bank accounts like they already have. It's a tourist visa. You can't get a bank account in almost every country on a tourist visa. Just giving everyone a bank account lead to the mess with the scammers. If you actually want to live here and do banking, get a visa designed to live here! The DTV isn't designed for living in the country long term, it's for digital "nomads" people who move around a lot.
Jay **********
Jay **********
TrustyGoldfish9051 it's not hard for them to add a transaction history requirement, verified by a bank manager. They already require it for the 3 previous months before renewing retirement visa, so it wouldn't even be a new practice. Seems like easy solutions to make sure things are on the up n up.

My Bangkok Bank account was frozen in the middle of last year, pretty much as soon as the visa requirements changed. I was given the option of keeping it open by taking out an LTR-compliant life insurance policy but I wasn’t prepared to pay for another product just to retain access to a bank account ... particularly after being blindsided by the sudden freeze in the first place.

The bigger issue for me was that even if I complied, there was no guarantee that another rule change wouldn’t come along six months later and leave me in exactly the same position.

So I’m actually surprised your account remained open for another year.

Now if you're like me and you maintain bank accounts in several jurisdictions, you'll face almost no issues.

I will most likely stick with QR code ATM withdrawals for my Bangkok Bank account or just use my SCB account as I generally do nowadays anyway, following the 2028 expiration of my card unless I happen to transition to another visa such as marriage or non-B by then. Remains to be seen.

you just need the mobile app of the bank and tap cardless withdrawal on both ATM and phone
Biff *******

@Paul ******
you use the bank’s app at the ATM. No set up required. Cardless withdrawal is one of the options at the ATM

that's useful, thanks!

next time you’re at an ATM check the option. Doesn’t even have to be your bank’s ATM. Many of them offer options for other bank’s customers to use them.

You go through the options in your app and scan the QR code that appears on the ATM screen. Done.

Whoa but they didn’t close your account?! That’s amazing news, especially considering how Bangkok Bank has been acting.

Why do you need a Bangkok Bank ATM card? Some banks (Siam Commercial for one) tell their (Thai) customers they no longer issue them.

@Jay *****************
That sounds like a troll comment. Of course they still issue debit cards. If they didn't, they'd have to dismantle the infrastructure that stores use to accept cards, which would be a big problem for foreigners who can't use QR codes and in particular, the transition towards a cashless society, since forcing everyone to use QR codes would destroy tourism and also cause enormous problems for Thai society.

You can simply order a new ATM/debit card via the SCB app and have it sent to your address. Unlike Bangkok Bank, SCB allows foreigners to request a new ATM/debit card online and doesn't require you to show up in person.

RadiantCamel1017 I'm afraid you're going to have to take my word as an anonymous trollhunter speaking to someone using a nickname. Those words were indeed spoken by a SCB employee in my nearest branch to a Thai customer. What those words meant depends upon your reading and comprehension skills. I'll give you a clue; the original poster was talking about a personal interaction in branch, likewise, so was I.

OK you should have mentioned that earlier. In other words, they've changed HOW they issue cards (via the app) not that they're not issued at all anymore. Thanks for clarifying

FascinatingParrot1715 Yes.
Jay ******************

RadiantCamel1017 Neither apply. The bank teller in the branch told the truth. 'We no longer issue new cards'. What she didn't add was this is now done centrally via web/mobile banking and sent by post. Someone as helpful as that should be working in the Thai embassies/consulates.

RadiantCamel1017 his name speaks for itself. He is a troll. I did not know i could order a new debit card online. How would I do this? In the app?
RadiantC********

@Jay *****************
again, most likely a language barrier or she didn't know what she's talking about. That would be a world first: a bank not offering new debit cards. Never heard of that anywhere in the world.
Jay ******************
Jay ******************
RadiantCamel1017 We shall all have to take your word as a Thai bank manager. Same as knowing what the intentions and long term plans are of the Thai government. The penny hasn't yet dropped? A Thai employee speaking to a Thai customer IN BRANCH; 'We no longer issue renewed debit cards'.
RadiantC********
RadiantC********
@Jay *****************
no Thai bank is phasing out physical cards. Either the employee was delusional or there was a language barrier.

what do you mean. I have scb i never heard of this
