TLDR : Answer Summary
Many DTV visa holders have reported experiencing issues with bank account freezes or closures at Bangkok Bank. Users shared that accounts were often frozen despite providing requisite documentation, leading to frustration. Some mentioned that account closures were prevalent, not just for DTV holders, but for other visa types as well. A recurring theme indicated that having connections to Thailand, such as being married to a Thai citizen or owning property, might influence the ability to maintain a bank account. There are numerous discussions in online expat groups about these issues, highlighting a need for clarity and consistency in how banks manage accounts for visa holders.

Anonymous participant 166 I wonder if it was when the account holder applied for a new debit card. That's usually the only time you actually need to have any interaction with your bank, once every 5 years.

There have been well over 100 posts in the various Thai visa and Expat groups about this in the past 2 days. Do a search if you are part of different groups, and you'll see literally 1000 post comments about this exact issue.

They closed my account (and gave me my money bank) when I showed up at the bank (Rama 9). No waiting. But that was last month.

It is not just DTV holders. Many accounts have been frozen. People reporting even after supplying requested documents at the branch they are still having to wait days for accounts to be unfrozen. Many are having accounts closed. Seems it is a bit of a mess to say the least.

I saw those news reports too, and I also heard that the bank doesn’t unfreeze accounts for DTV visa holders because they see us as tourists who don’t need Thai bank accounts. I’m just concerned about that, and I’d like to seek advice from those in the DTV community who have already successfully unfrozen their accounts. I think it will take some times to unfreeze the account even though we have documents.

Anonymous participant be married to a Thai or own property. Those are the only 2 real options for keeping your account at BB with a DTV. Without those your account will most likely be closed as they have strict rules about account holders on a tourist visa. Good luck !!

Anonymous participant Yes, you need clarity about your situation ie DTV accounts. From what I have seen across all visa types the application of these rules has not been consistent.
