Is it true that Bangkok Bank closes accounts for DTV visa holders?

Have you all been getting your bank accounts closed if you had your account before you got your DTV? I’m scared to go into my branch and hand them my passport. I use my ibanking quite a bit. Any info on this? Is it in fact bangkok banks policy to close your account if you’re on a dtv?

I’m gonna try the drivers license trick. That is a god idea. Unfortunately I was just forced to renew a 5 year (my secomd 5 year) to a 2 year also due to Dtv. I wonder if the 2 year license will give them a heads up to request my passport?

TLDR : Answer Summary
The discussion centers around concerns from expats about bank account closures at Bangkok Bank if they switch to a Digital Nomad Visa (DTV). Some users confirm that Bangkok Bank has a policy of closing accounts for those who switch to a DTV, regardless of when the account was opened. Others share their personal experiences of having their accounts remain active despite changing visa status, suggesting variances in bank enforcement. Tips include using a Thai driver's license as identification, which is widely accepted at banks.

I had my Ed-Visa when I opened my Bangkok Bank account. Now, I can no longer use it.

Currently on a 60 day Visa free entry. Bangkok Bank Pattaya Klang. Account seven years old. I had a request to see the bank within 30 days.

Went to bank last Friday. Took photocopies of passport and entry stamp. Did a facial recognition photo. I was assured there will be no issues.

I’ve had a krungsri account for 7 years while on a non-O and then switched to a DTV earlier this year. Got the alert on my mobile banking app to come in and do the face scan again so I did, and I also updated my address in Thailand and a new passport number. The lady at the bank didn’t care, and just processed everything without looking at my visa.

Seems if you opened an account a few years ago you should be ok 🙏

Anonymous participant 119 More or less but depends on the circumstances. So far, I've not faced any issues but both my Thai bank accounts were opened a long time ago. One on a work permit, the other was upgraded to a work permit because at the time you couldn't get internet banking access without one. Tourists were only given a bank account with debit card but no internet banking access at the time.

Banks are not allowing DTV holders to open a bank accounts. That's why they're being closed. Why does this surprise people that a country does not want non-residents to have bank accounts?
Paul *******
BrightDachshund800 Even retirement visa holders are having their bank accounts locked, sometimes for weeks on end. This isn't purely an issue for DTV or tourist visa holders. You're making assumptions that all is fine and dandy as long as you're some sort of long term "resident" when that means nothing in the case of Thailand.

Thailand views the world through the lens of Thais vs foreigners. As long as you're not a Thai citizen, you have very few rights, regardless of what visa you're on.

Foreigners, regardless of how well they speak Thai, even if they hold permanent residency, still need a work permit to work, still can't own land and will still need to pay 10 times more than locals for entry to national parks.

BrightDachshund800 non residents? Most of the dtv holders ARE residents of Thailand

Anonieme deelnemer 476 DTV is a tourist visa, why will tourists need a bank account?

I never had the idea when I travel for some time through a country, to open a bank account there.

What is so special on a Thai bank account that a lot of people want it?

And the people who need it because of a marriage or retirement visa complain they don't like to have money on that account.

Is this all really only because of the possibility to pay with Promptpay QR code which in 99.999 percent of the cases just can be done in cash, or do I miss something?
BrightDac*********
@Luit ****************
Nailed it. People want Resident benefits on a tourist visa. I understand the prompt pay thing, but complaining when a loophole is closed is ridiculous.
BrightDac*********
Anonymous participant 476 No. A DTV (Digital Talent Visa) holder in Thailand is a legal non-immigrant visa status, while a resident is someone with permanent residency or a long-term visa granting resident status. A DTV holder is not automatically considered a legal resident of Thailand, so the two terms describe different legal statuses but are not the same.

I opened my account on an ed visa 18 years ago, my account is still active, it has to be accounts opened in the past few years

Just FYI, if you have a Thai driver’s license you do not need to show your passport in the bank or anywhere else. A Thai license is a valid ID everywhere in Thailand.
Paul *******
Anonymous participant 741 Quite often, banks demand to see a passport to do most things. Exchanging money can be done with just an ID card (despite regulations stating that to purchase foreign currency, everyone, including Thai citizens need to show a passport).

However, yes, it's certainly an idea to show your Thai DL unless they insist on sighting a passport.

Anonymous participant 741 not everywhere.You cant fly domestic with thai driving license

@Incognia *********
Of course you can. A Thai DL is better than a passport for the purposes of domestic flying as its also in Thai.

I’ve flown domestic with DL a bunch of times

Anonymous participant 741 You have not witnessed a foreigner denied boarding on a domestic flight then - my pal did as they only had their Thai driving licences and not passport. We were discussing this the other week about just carrying our DL's. As for bank they take copies of visa etc - they want to see you are legally in the country - how does a DL do that?
Anonymous ******************
@Greg *******
if you open up a new account, they’ll want to see your visa, yes. If you are going into the bank to update your phone no or whatever on an existing account, you’ll have 0 problems using your DL - unless they recently changed something to crack down on bank accounts that I’m unaware of. But I’ve been only showing DL for years, even last week, and had 0 issues. Also all my domestic flights I just showed my DL, but of course in an airport you should always have your passport on you, they can always ask for it there.

Anonymous participant 741 I changed my address recently. They took copies of passport again, the visa page and the entrance stamp. I am sure they would be fine with a DL for passbook update. Changing address they also updated my visa change eand I had to sign all passport pages copied. If you are updating your phone do they not want to see it is tied to your passport?
Anonymous ******************
@Greg *******
interesting. Thanks for the update. Maybe they are trying to get everyone’s visa updated in their system 🤷‍♂️ I went into my bank a few months ago and changed my address and had no issue, I showed them my DL and they helped me update it via the app, so next time I don’t even have to go there as I now know how to do it myself

Anonymous participant 741 I think it was standard at his bank (Not Bangkok Bank) for updates. When I went in I asked about a new account at that branch. She gave me a list of requirements and it literally said "No DTV". One was it must be a visa issued by the Immigration Department. I went back a month later for something else and they asked me if I wanted account here closer to where i lived. I said I am not running about to Immigration for a Resident Certificate etc. She said no need - passport and your other branch passbook is OK. You never get consistency 🙂 🙂

The question is: how will they know that you switched to a DTV visa, if you don't go in person and update your particulars? People who opened a bank account with another visa in the past, they still show in the bank system as if they had the previous visa, which apparently is not DTV.

Anonymous participant 627 I think that the bank accounts suspended are either the ones opened in the past on tourist visa or accounts that have not verified with face recognition/ phone number which happened just in the last year. If someone had his bank account suspended suddenly suspended otherwise, it would be good to hear that.

Анонімний учасник 627 friend had suspension in July in Bangkok bank, updated with DTV visa details and house owner documents, and suspended now again. Opened on parents visa

Anonymous participant 627 There is an expat claiming he had his account frozen suddenly on a Retirement Visa. I would bet he opened it on a Visa Exempt / TR and never updated it. This was probably due to how it would work with agents. They would open the account on TR/VE, apply for 90 day O. During the 90 day transfer in the 800k and get bank documents. Then use then for 12 months extension. If bank details were not updated then it looked like account under a VE/TR
Greg ********
Anonymous participant 627 This is what has happened with both my accounts. Unless I went in and updated something like address etc the bank had the old details. I have not heard of them getting sophisticated on this such as the "B" expiring and the bank asking for updated details. However, if the previous visa was a tourist visa they may be asking for updates.

Bangkok bank says even if you opened the account before 2023 they will close the account if you switch to a DT visa . they told me only option is marriage, visa, education, visa, non-o . contact the bank ask by yourself. Some people don’t want to believe . and my girlfriend asked in Thai too to be sure that we’re not misunderstanding…..

And I’m from EU . Not china not Russia or India or whatever .

Just ask a Thai friend if he can go inside for you and ask the staff.
Keith ************
Anonymous participant 201 how would they know you've switched visas?

@Keith ***********
They will ask you to come in to update information
Anonymous ******************
Anonymous participant 201 Good information. 👍 Some people will never believe anything that goes against the DTV, but the so-called benefits they keep arguing about are being slowly removed. Whatever, it’s all over the news, and it just takes time until each case is dealt with.
