Has anyone ever been REFUSED to exit Thailand??? Today I drove all the way from Korat to the friendship boarder in Laos .. my visa was good until the end of today so I’m not over staying .. I was to depart Thailand to go make a proper non o visa online while in Laos.. the female immigration officer refused to let me leave! Even having all the documents to support my intention of the Non O Visa.. She did mention about doing repeat visa runs, last entry I returned from China by air … which is fine I’m leaving to go get the proper visa. I understand not being let back in, but not being able to leave, she told me to go get a flight out. Also should mention the same thing happend to a few others while I was there.

TLDR : Answer Summary
A user shared their experience being refused exit from Thailand at the Laos border despite having a valid visa until the end of the day. The immigration officer did not allow them to leave, citing concerns about repeated visa runs and scrutiny at land borders. Other comments highlighted ongoing issues with being denied entry and exit at various borders and suggested that current regulations are more stringent.

STOP DOING BORDE4 RUN THEN

They have said the old days are over and land border crossings don’t count

But the people that have been abusing the system for decades are now mad they can’t continue to do land border runs?

Too many cheap Charlie’s that can’t even afford a flight
Rc *******
@Tim *********
i am a 'cheap charlie' that does land border runs all the time. Yes i am poor and cannot afford to buy a flight ticket.

So what's your problem? Are you trying to tell everyone that you are a filthy rich bugger?
Bob *****
@Rc ******
he's doing what most people do when they post us kind of nonsense, he's standing up with a big big fag above his head saying look at me I'm an idiot look at me I'm an idiot over and over again or maybe he's just having a bad day. nah the first one.
Jordan *****
@Tim *********
so foreigners are banned from leaving Thailand by land now?
Tim **********
@Jordan ****
to make a border run? Yeah

It’s been published

You fly out like a real tourist

Not a land border run for people trying to avoid getting the correct visa

No more land border runs

Don’t be a cheap Charlie

Buy an air ticket

It’s like a hundred bucks

Thais don’t want people living in Thailand for $1000 a month

It’s $2000 a month and should be increased to $3k a month
Tania **********
@Tim *********
Wealth people do not come to Thailand , period.

Your comment is rude towards tourists that come here , to visit and enjoy , nobody is talking about living ; you are disgusting 🤮
Paul ***************
@Tim *********
the guy is just telling us what happened . No need for a lecture and it is definitely none of your business what someone is spending here a month .
Johan ***************
@Tim *********
What? We are for sure tourists and would love to make a roadtrip into Laos and back, with friends. Are you sure you know what you are talking about?
Tim **********
@Johan **************
tourists don’t stay over 90 days man

Tourists go to their home country in between visits

150 days a years tops now for tourists and to do that you need to fly out of Thailand
Darren *****
@Tim *********
if they don't want the cheap Charlie's why not let them out and deny reentry? Seems a bit contradicting.
Jordan *****
@Darren ****
yes, these new rules are disturbing, especially since they are not mentioned anywere. I couldn’t care less that they might not let me back in, but I see no reason why I would have to be denied to leave the country by land. Imagine taking a bus from Bangkok to Mukdahan, to later be told you can’t leave the country
Andy *******
@Tim *********
what an ignorant bigoted comment for 3k a month you can live anywhere ,of course people will chose to live in developing cheaper cost

countries to obtain the benefit of a cheaper cost of living this will only increase with and exodus of retirees from Europe and probably USA so you along with the thais better get used to it

Cheap Charlie is a human being too. You are a Rich guy and dont even read what the guy is writing. There are people in this world who love to be in thailand too for a longer time without having the load you have.
Jamie ******
Pure and simple,,hes an idiot ,,plenty people like travelling by land and experience that brings ,,pure and simple ,,some might even call it the luxury of life , doing the simple things ,nothing to do at all with “ cheap Charlie”

Yes there are peoole abusing the system ,and digital nomads have a lot to answer for ,,but there are also lots who love the joy of travelling overland and meeting the locals along the way and the energy of border towns ..have a great day
Tim **********
@Conrad ***********
well to fucking bad. Thailand does not need or want cheap Charlie’s surviving on. $1000 a month

Go someplace else

If you can’t respect the laws of Thailand you need to leave

No more land border runs for the cheap Charlie’s that can’t afford a plane ticket

Why are you defending illegal actions?
Ally ************
@Tim *********
The decision to leave any country.. using whichever mode of transport you choose to take (air, sea, road, rail) is a personal decision and is down to one's own discernment.. it's absolutely legal to walk through a border check point from one country to another.. if it wasn't they wouldn't have check points.. they would just build a wall with barbed wire atop.. so unless there is a legal restriction on you travelling.. such as an invalid passport or an arrest warrant has been flagged.. immigration have no right to stop you leaving.. whereas they have every right to prevent you entering if you don't have an appropriate visa.. or are considered to be abusing immigration 'rules' in some way.. you appear to be accusing people exercising their freedom to travel of 'illegal actions'.. I'm not sure what crime you believe is being committed by properly documented people who want to travel out of Thailand.. so perhaps you could elaborate on 'the crime' you are referring to here.. or is it simply that you despise people who are not as wealthy as you.. or people that do not share your outlook on life.. i don't do border runs myself so I'm not affected.. but I'll defend everybody's right to exercise their free will.. and for just treatment irrespective of their demographic or social standing!
Tania **********
@Ally ***********
It does not affect mysekf either, Ally, but as you mentioned, but i defend those in this circunstance, created by ignorance.

Good tourists are been pushed away, surely.
Tania **********

Best as Accurate ,comment ; Immigration or whoever, are messing up , been rude , and putting abuser and laws violaters etc , together with genuine visitors, in the same bag.

Absolutelly true, that one is free to cross border as wish .

Thailand always welcome lots in different budgets ; all fine, everyone happy.

This guy is a poor frustated , i imagine from where…..

but this guy wont back by tourist visa exemption.Are you sure did you read what he post?
Marty *********
Immigration is looking at patterns of travel behavior. Using tourist entries to cross back & forth across land borders is probably one of those patterns.
Julien *******
What?! 🤔 That makes no sense. I think she's just being overly cautious due to new directives for IO's from the government. I think maybe that's why. She's probably worried about losing her job-land border officers are being scrutinized the most at the moment.
Lynnette *******
@Julien ******
maybe they didn't have proof of leaving Laos? Or there's a worry if denied entry to Laos they would be deported back?

Bob **********
@David ***************
you must have a history of exempt entries but she said fly get a flight before you have overstay
Jan ******************
@Julien ******
Nope, this has been the case at several border checkpoints on both sides for a while.
Viktoria *********
@Jan *****************
For example, which ones?
Jan ******************
@Viktoria ********
I don’t have a complete overview, but from what I understand, all of the land border checkpoints were effectively closed for a period, and they weren’t even allowing people with METVs to cross. The most recent updates indicate that Chiang Rai at Chiang Khong and Nong Khai are now allowing travellers with valid visas to pass.
Viktoria *********
@Jan *****************
Thank you for your reply. I encountered an aggressive female officer in Nong Khai back in February. I've never had a border run, but she doesn't go into detail, just yells at everyone without a visa like crazy. Do you know what the situation is like in Savannakhet now? (I'm trying to figure out if there's a similarly aggressive officer there)
Tania **********
@Viktoria ********
I heard about rude females officers around too ; is a pity, as this push genuine tourists away; people in holidays like be welcome.
Greg ***********
@Viktoria ********
if you live in Thailand on visa-exempt stamps, you need to be prepared to be refused entry into Thailand very soon on your next trips
Tania **********
@Greg **********
I believe the topic here, is about not abusing the system ,as They allowed go out and back , before for many years, for genuine travellers ; none of they like live here, but stay, spend money , go and come back for a while before leave .

Now they are putting abusers and genuine travellers in same bag ; this will put good ones away.
Jan ******************
@Viktoria ********
Sorry, I have no specific overview of Mukdahan. You can post a question in the group and see whether any members have more detailed knowledge. I would assume things will gradually normalise, and the visa process in both Vientiane and Savannakhet is generally still reported to work very smoothly.
Julien *******
@Jan *****************
why for leaving though?
Tania **********
@Julien ******
Everyday we read from someone about one other weird thing, now they don’t allow leave either …or need leave by flight 🤔

Slowly become a mess !
Jan ******************
@Julien ******
I have no clear answer to this. They have also been refusing people with visas for a while. It just seems to be a somewhat uncontrolled and unclear crackdown at the moment.
Tania **********
@Jan *****************
Exactly; there are people been refused , even with all in hands…very confused, all these.
Simon ********
Happens fairly frequently on that border
Viktoria *********
Is it been in Nong Khai?

Unfortunately, this has been an ongoing issue for some time. People have been denied and turned back in both directions at the land border crossings. I would recommend flying in and out instead — that works fine, and a Non-O visa application in Vientiane is generally very straightforward. You might manage to exit through one of the other border checkpoints, but the situation there has been inconsistent and quite chaotic lately.
Larry *********
@Jan *****************
why not just get the proper visa in Thailand if you want to stay long term ? Geeze, all these border runs to game the system is what ruined it. One time is fine but just to keep doing border runs is not the way anymore.
Bob **********
@Larry ********
you can’t get a non-o in Thailand without a bank account and you can’t open one without a non-o visa he’s doing the right thing guess he’s been doing border bounces he’ll have to fly
Larry *********
@Bob *********
he's done so many they even warned him last time. then he goes for the old Lao land border run . they've seen his pattern. he knew it was coming. if he cant qualify for a foreign countrys immigration rules then its how do i beat the rules. it never ends.
Exit **********
@Bob *********
unfortunately this is the rule now, very confusing. There is actually a way: Apply for non-O in your home-country. For that you need to show the 800.000 on ANY account in any country (amount can also be splitted on several accounts) or appropriate income. When in Thailand you can open a bank account and the following year apply for non-O in Thailand. I prefer an annual family visit to my home country and apply for non-O at home.
Bob **********
@Exit *********
easy in Laos or Cambodia or Vietnam but you’ll show funds there my guess is the OP has a “GF” that he just can’t leave 😎😎😎

Sorry, what does your visa expiration date have to do with your required departure date? What type of visa do you have? You say it expired today but when does your entry stamp expire?
