I have a retirement visa ending early August. I am moving out of Thailand now and may not return before the expiry of the visa. Will it be a problem to return to Thailand as tourist. I hold a Swiss passport.

TLDR : Answer Summary
The user is concerned about returning to Thailand as a tourist after their retirement visa expires in early August. They hold a Swiss passport and plan to leave Thailand without returning before the visa expires. Comments indicate that re-entering as a tourist shouldn't pose a problem, but they may need to handle reapplying for a Non-O visa promptly since many offices might require several weeks for the process. Additionally, some suggest obtaining a re-entry permit or extension before leaving.

Wouldn’t it just be easier to get a re-entry permit at local immigration or airport?

a re-entry permit wouldn’t help if he doesn’t return before the underlying visa/extension expires.

I was told that the retirement visa can only be renewed 45-30 days before the expiry and cannot be renewed now. I do not need a re entry as I have multiple entries already granted. My worry is that my retirement visa will expire while I am out of Thailand. Will it be problem to return to Thailand for a normal short visit? (I hold a Swiss passport and do not require a visa to enter)

a re-entry is only valid as long as the stay permit he is on. When his "retirement visa" expires, the re-entry permit expires, too!

You can re-enter on a Non-O purchased from "home" if you want to speed things up

It won’t be a problem returning as a tourist but you’ll have to start the process to get a non O again fairly quickly as many offices will require up to 21 days to convert.
