TLDR : Answer Summary
The 2000 baht fee charged to exit Thailand at the Wang Prachan border post, particularly for same-day returns, has sparked confusion and debate among expats. While some visitors believe this fee has no legal basis and may stem from potential corruption or 'unofficial' practices by immigration officers, others cite variations in cross-border regulations that might require travelers to either pay or stay overnight in the neighboring country before re-entering Thailand. Noteworthy comments reference different experiences at various border crossings, emphasizing the inconsistency in fees and procedures, and suggest that travelers avoid friction by considering legitimate overnight stays abroad.

There is no fee to exit Thailand. And there is no “service fee” to make a smooth run. What does occasionally exist is outright corruption, extortion, and misuse of power by little despots in uniforms. One of the more ugly sides of Thailand (and even worse so in some neighboring countries). It is not like that (immigration) officers “can do whatever they want”. Unfortunately the means to stand your ground and to refuse and appeal are limited, lengthy and complicated. It seems that Thailand doesn’t really take the fight against corruption even remotely serious enough, or they would enable people to report and defend themselves against such unlawful actions. Nothing in the law (immigration act) states that one has to stay in a third country at least one night before returning - made up on the go as other things, too. But it is what it is for now. So, if you want to avoid friction, just extend a border bounce to a short trip abroad, enjoy a night or two abroad with those 2,000 THB instead.
you need to explain better for anybody to give you an answer...what visa are you on? Did it expire, and you want a new visa? Do you want to extend your current visa? You don't pay to exit, unless you have an overstay of 4 days (x500/day)
I entered with 30 days visa exemption. I crossed into Malaysia and returned to Thailand to get the new 60 day visa exemption. The immigration woman charged me 2000 baht when I left.
so, now you are in Thailand with a 60 day exemption, and you were made to pay 2000 upon entry to Thailand from Malaysia, right? Did they charge you the 2000 in Thailand? on your way out of Thailand, or on your way in? Did you overstay your first 30 days?
Because all entries are at the discretion of the immigration officer, which means they can do whatever they want in regards to your re-entering Thailand.
There are many borders, especially with Malaysia, that will not let you return at all the same day. You must stay at least 1 night in Malaysia before returning.
well then 24 hours in Sadao will change it so much more. Think Tarrantino's 'From Dusk 'til Dawn', Blade Runner, Mad Max and Alice in wonderland all rolled into one.
