Is it necessary to carry 20,000 THB in cash for re-entry into Thailand on a Visa Exemption?

Good Morning, will leave Thailand for Cambodia and come back in Thailand in a month or two by land border on Visa Exemption. I know that the official cash requirement is 10000 THB. However think I noticed in the past few people advising that 20K was better. Any concrete experience that justify this ?? Obviously I'd prefer carrying the less cash possible with me while roaming around Cambodia...

TLDR : Answer Summary
The post discusses the cash requirements for re-entering Thailand via land border on a visa exemption. Although the official requirement is 10,000 THB, anecdotal evidence suggests that carrying 20,000 THB may be advisable as travelers have reported being asked for proof of funds in that amount. Some users share experiences of successful re-entry without being asked for documentation, indicating variability in enforcement.

Hi, we did the same recently, we entered Thailand after 7 days spent in Vientiane, no problem at all. The officer didn't ask about any proofs. It's our second visit to Thailand on a Tourist visa.

Yes we bought it in Vientiane, and entered Thailand after 3 days.

so when you entered the country you had a VALID tourist visa that you'd bought from a thai consulate IN your passport right?

OR

Did you enter the country on a visa exempt entry?

the requirements that are being enforced are 20K baht or the equivalent in CASH (not the 10k that is actually the rule).

You can be asked for proof of funds, proof of onward travel and proof of a hotel booking. BUT most people if they're asked for anything are asked for proof of funds AND you'll need 20K baht or the equivalent in CASH if you're asked.

it's mostly the Aranyaprathet - Poi Pet border between thailand and cambodia that ask for proof of funds.

Btw,

, Feb 1st I did a Visa run from Cambodia into Thailand and back to Cambodia at Anlong Veng/Choam painless process on either side, Thai immigration asked nothing of me on entry, but pointed out that I will have only one more entry by land this year on exit back to Cambodia.

IF you're going to cross into thailand by the land border at Nong Khai you won't be asked for anything, not proof of funds, proof of onward, travel proof of hotel booking, not nothing.

BUT seeing as you're going to be in Vientiane why not snap up a single entry tourist visa from the consulate there? That gets you stamped in for 60 days when you enter the country AND you wouldn't be burning one of the TWO 30 day visa exempt entries by land you're allowed in a calendar year either.. <- Just a thought ;)

oh good, i was thinking it was better to show THB. By the way my return will probably happen from Ventiane that i intend to visit after cambodia. But of course i can withdraw the $ at the end of my trip in cambodia if Laos does not have the same facilities

@Frank *******
you can show in US $. But carry a little more due to exchange rates.

@Frank *******
good point, the proof of funds does NOT have to be thai baht, US dollars would work just as well.

No need to carry cash you brought from Thailand during the whole month in Cambodia. You can hit an ATM in Cambodia, get US$. (e.g. At ABA bank with my card I can get up to $500 for a $5 fee, and up to $1000 for a $9 fee). No problem to change $ in THB in the border area.
