TLDR : Answer Summary
There have been reports of increased checks and interrogations upon entry into Thailand, primarily due to the perceived abuse of the visa exemption system. Many travelers have been using tourist visas for extended stays, leading authorities to scrutinize arrivals more closely to ensure travelers are genuine tourists. Comments indicate that the enforcement can vary by individual officer discretion, border control locations, and times of the year, suggesting a complex interplay of immigration policy and personal judgment during the entry process.

I've been back and forth multiple times since October used a agent to arrive at airport straight through no wait in queue

Yeah all seems a bit random. The guy in front of me at BKK last week got asked for onward ticket, hotel booking and me they didnβt even say a word. First entry this year but spent like 5mo in Thailand last year on visa exemptions so I was a bit worried about being interrogated. BKK and Chiang Mai seem to be much more relaxed than Phuket or DMK

So what's the difference between a visa exemption for 60 days plus 30 day. extension from immigration. To a 90 day single entry tourist visa when you can stay 60 days plus 30 days extension at an immigration. The difference is only money

Being an immig officer is a very mundane job so they enjoy a nice chat discussing your holiday plans, assuming it is of course a holiday and nothing more sinister - they are exceptionally polite in my experience.

If so cut it to 30 days,if not people will come for 60+30 not illegal, unless they put it in black and white it will always be used to its fullest stay until a IO says no

There were attempted bombings a few weeks ago so extra security on entry. Visitors from a designated number of countries can enter for upto 60 days under THE TOURIST EXEMPTION SCHEME. You can obtain a 30 day extension for 1900 baht at a local Immigration Office. That's pretty self-explanatory and doesnt include entry for living purposes which requires a Visa. So all extensions are considered by and at the discretion of an Immigration Officer.
there is no discretion you pay the 1900 baht and you get it theyβre only interested in money

Just wait a bit longer.I'm quite sure it will go back to 30 days OR they will go back to a maximum of 2 border runs per calendar year.

I just came through a few days ago with no visa. Staying for thirty days. Going through immigration they noticed on my previous tourist visa that I did a one day border run to Cambodia. They delayed me for 90 minutes to let me know that I cannot do that any more. So word of warning to any people coming in on tourist visa. Make sure you leave the country every 60 days, but do not do a border run any more. Leave for a few days instead, or longer.
theyβre turning people away who have done that going to another country then coming back

Have a non- o visa have travelled a few times this year not a problem just a smiling face on arrival. Helps if you do the right thing and donβt think you are above the law. Itβs not rocket science
So after being here a few years, I've noticed that during high season, things get a little lax. But when low season arrives, it's like law enforcement suddenly feels they need to justify their existence, look busy, and that's when we get all the motorbike helmet checks, round-ups of illegal foreign workers, crackdowns on drunk driving and drug offenses, etc.
Once high season and millions of tourists come back, a lot of that zealous law enforcement activity fades away.
That's my observation.
And this is a tense year. A lot of stuff (global events) is negatively impacting Thailand through no fault of their own, and it's making some Thais edgy.
painful unless you have your laundry on your head. Then itβs come on in. Welcome. Want some free stuff? How can we conform to YOUR culture? Pathetic.
unfortunately your so right . Maybe just maybe Thailand is waking up wish Canada would too .π

Dunno. Got pulled aside for questioning at DMK last Friday at 1 AM. I'm just visiting. Last entry was 13 months ago. Many people didn't prepare TDAC or couldn't show return flight. I had the 3 proofs. Came in from Japan where nobody had bothered me.
your last entry 13 months ago..it's a long time! It doesnt seem like somebody who didn't return since 1 year they can really suspect to be living in thailand? It's getting very strict
same as their Immigration colleagues processing border bounces at land borders. They don't get fired ...instead Suvarnabhumi airport blame the farang

I noticed that when I entered on Monday. I saw some Indians being questioned by officers at the flight gate and saw a lot of people sent away by officers. I guessed it was to complete the TDAC but that's just a guess.
It is becoming more of an issue....interrogated...hard to get bank account when everything was in order etc... Next time I return . Next Jan approx doing the non o retirement same as this visit and will find my thai bank with 800 k.
Want to avoid agent as think things will get tighter over the coming months or years and intend to stay here full time when I officially retire in two years
no one here has been able to define what a genuine tourist is and when they did, they would have excluded by definition most returning visitors. The immigration officers arenβt able to do it either.
I spend 4 months in hotels in Thailand each year travelling and relaxing. As far as I am not working, or renting long term low income appartments, no one can claim I am not a tourist
.... ummm.... so what? There is nothing in writing that would state that you are not a genuine tourists by the number of times you applied for a tourist visa. Immigration officers' discretion. Cry all you want, if they choose to not let you in... The majority of us have no problems.
why would you so casually respond to a remark withβsoβ. Does your country allow foreigners to come and stay as long as they want without a proper visa? I would guess no so why would you be so why would you think itβs OK when it comes to Thailand?
very simple. It is because I am talking about people with proper passports who are not breaking Thai laws with what they are doing and therefore does not have any relation to any country who does have such laws in which case then they would be breaking laws. Capisce?
where does it say anywhere in this OP and threads of an "improper" visa? ..... People are simply renewing their tourist visas more than once. No one anywhere in writing has stated a limit to how many times you can renew a tourist visa..... So, stop making shit up.
It's actually super disrespectful to Thailand, the people, the law and order etc. For those who do it, they will say they love Thailand, respect Thailand, but clearly they just try to beat the system for selfish purposes.
it seems you are the sort of person who believes there should be warnings such as "do not iron clothes while wearing them". Common sense says you should not do this, but unless it is specifically stated you think it is allowed. You would then sue the iron manufacturer for not warning you. Similarly, common sense says the Thai law intends tourist visas to be used to be a tourist. They upped the time from 30 + 30 to 60 + 30, because that is what they believe is the time for a valid tourist. But people like you try to find loopholes all the time.
hahaha you are the one suggesting everyone should try to rort the system by looking for loopholes. You sound like the sort of person that Thailand would be better off without.
there would have to be something in writing that states that you can only apply for a tourist visa so many times. There isn't, so the term abuse is null and void until then..... The discretion of the Immigration officers is used to keep out certain people that they have the opinion are not needed in Thailand. Plenty of good foreigners are still allowed in....... This came up in a discussion about Vietnam. Vietnam doesn't even have a "retirement visa" but there are foreigners that have lived here for 8 years by simply renewing their 3 month tourist visas.......
no shit Sherlock and if you paid attention, you'd see that I mentioned that there's nothing in writing that states how many times you can visit Thailand.
pay attention to everything I wrote, before assuming what I know and think. . . . I already stated that it is up to the Immigration officers BECAUSE there is nothing in writing stating how many times you can enter Thailand as a tourist.
Exactly! Never overstay, just go when you have to and come back. I do it a lot in Vietnam and never nobody asked me something. In Thailand last time they open the red light and bring me for questioning π€£

Because over the last few years since they extended the 30 visa free days to 60 , many have abused it to live in Thailand instead of for tourism which it is intended .
Everywhere you go especially in Pattaya Indians working selling suits and other stuff, I know they have no work permits, impossible cause of how many shops and stores they own and run!
You need the Indians to rustle up a good curry and the Africans for the βColombian marching powderβ Theyβre βwellβ travelled ππππ
last week I walked out of my condo on soil 6 and walked to soi 4 and I couldn't believe all the Africans. I pay a lot of money to do things the legal way. The cops know they are there and have no visa but government officials blame legal long term retirement for all the problems. It blows my mind
I posted about this before, and some woman attacked the post saying I am prejudiced. Just stating the fact. You forgot about their woman who now compete with Thai and Vietnamese for customers
ruin what? If it is something you shouldn't do... then it will be prevented. What's wrong with that? . . if preventing it from happening ruins it for the many, then the many shouldn't be doing it? π
and many people have not abused it, people are being interrogated or denied after using it once, for a couple months. Not 6+ months, or even years, as others are mentioning.
All thailand has to do is state how long they want you on exempt or tourist visas
They extend visa exempt from 30 days to 60, and then have a problem that people are staying too long, itβs hilariously stupid and a problem almost entirely of their own making
Even parts of getting a TR visa are an absolute joke, in a country heavily effected extreme weather conditions the embassy you apply at may very well ask for your entire stay to be prebooked
Itβs an absolute circus all around and clear as mud
no, it doesnβt. Some people only stay for a month or two and not three months.
And as i said itβs entirely on thailand to define what they do or donβt want to allow, stop defending an irrefutably horrible system that is contradictory and arbitrary at best.
Literally all thailand has to do is say
You can stay a maximum of X days on VE
A maximum of X days on TR
A maximum of X days on combined VE + TR
Problem solved, you canβt ask people to follow rules that donβt exist or are invisible
itβs always been up to the IO if you want to stay longer BUY a visa for the length of stay you would like thatβs why the have them why would you border bounce after a month ??
right... so using a visa free entry numerous times to live here without getting a proper visa is pretty close to the definition of "abusing" the visa free. Its not the intended use. But I also see you just troll comment throughout this.
um.... it's not legally in writing. It's an opinion. An opinion and discretion of the Immigration officer you face at the border. No need to call names, if you can't provide any legal proof to support your opinion. π
Itβs legally in writing you argumentative douche.
The 60 day exemption is for tourists. Which is a defined term. Someone who enters Thailand with the intention of not leaving and endlessly returning on similar back to back entries isnβt a tourist.
Feel free to challenge this in a Thailand court and prove that itβs not βlegally in writingβ.
Andrew *******
The immigration officer is the first line in that legal argument. You may convince them you are a tourist and they may let you in or you may not convince them and they determine not to grant the VE because they have formed a view that you arenβt a tourist.
This is literally how law works. βLegally in writingβ and all.
yes you are correct that it's not legally in writing. But there's a thing called generosity. And people who abuse generosity are the ones crying when it's taken away. That's what INTENDED use is for.
yes an opinion that the Immigration Officer makes that calls it abuse. Plain and simple. I don't understand why you must argue the point with everyone.
thanks for agreeing with me. As for the rest of your comment......I don't understand what the fck business it is of yours how many I comment to. So, STFU!
itβs totally abuse a tourist doesnβt stay in a country for 6-9 months the exempt stamp is for a TOURIST, the IOβs wouldnβt be pulling people aside for any other reason
