Please can I get definitive advise on funds in the bank once a marriage visa extension has been approved/stamped in your passport.

I currently live in Chiang Khan with my Thai wife.

I would like to know for certain when I can access the 400kbaht?

My stamp of approval (year extension) was the end of February 2021.

Your advice would be most appreciated.

TLDR : Answer Summary
Once you have received the stamp for your annual marriage visa extension in your passport, you are free to access the 400,000 baht in your bank account. Until that stamp is confirmed, it's advisable to keep the funds in your account, as different immigration offices may require the balance to be maintained until approval. After obtaining the stamp, there are no further restrictions on the funds until you prepare for your next year's extension, for which you will need to have the minimum balance again two months prior to applying.

Okay, there are ONLY two ways it works;

At SOME immigration offices ; you bank the 400K baht in a thai bank account in your name only for 2 months before you apply for your yearly extension, you get a 30 day under consideration stamp AND when you go in on that date you update your bank book to show them the 400K baht is still there. <- once you get the year extension inked in you can use the money

AND

At OTHER immigration offices; you bank the 400K baht in a thai bank account in your name only for 2 months before you apply for your yearly extension, you get a 30 day under consideration stamp AND when you go in on that date you DON'T update your bank book and show them the 400K bhat is still there <- once you get the 30 day under consideration stamp inked in you can use the money..

It's one or the other :P BUT seeing as you said you already got your year extension inked in you're totally free to use the money..

@Tim ******
. No. I've done it 3 times. Once you have the stamp, the 400k min balance isn't necessary until you are ready for the next year.

is there no 3 month waiting period after as there is for the retirement one?

@Tim ******
you are comparing apples to durian. The requirements for retirement extensions using banked money has NOTHING to do with the requirements for marriage extensions using banked money

many thanks Tod very helpful.

Bear in mind that to get your next years extension you’d need to have it back up to 400k two months prior to applying.

yes absolutely Stuart, and many thanks for your response, but I would like to access the money now following my stamp in the passport.

Then do as you say prior to my extension next year.

One of the enduring problems with “definitive advice” in this forum is that definitive advice for BKK or Ubon immigration won’t be definitive advice for your local immigration. So while it sounds like someone is being a smart ass to say “ask immigration” it’s actually the best advice available.

Unless, of course, someone has recently renewed their visa in your specific office.

there’s nothing wrong with asking questions here. If someone can help it often means not having a 2-3 hour drive to their local immigration office. Not every answer is accurate but in the long haul it may mean the difference of going to the office or not.

@Stu***
understand. I wasn’t trying to be an ass. I was just making a point. Sorry if it came out wrong.

And also why my last sentence said pretty much exactly what you said.

@Steve *********
didn’t take it that way. No worries.

Once you have your years stamp you can spend it down to zero. If you are on a “under consideration” stamp many offices will want you to keep it in your account until you get the full year stamp.

Ask immigration you were only there a couple of weeks ago
Steve *******
Best to leave it in untill they stamp the years extention in your passport. Then you're good to go. If you got it already then you can access your funds.

@Steve ******
Agree. If you have to return to Immigration to get the stamp do not access the funds. If you have the stamp good to go.
