What visa options are available in Thailand for an elderly Australian man on an expired O visa with a Thai wife?

Hi Everyone, I need some help in regard to my Father who is living in Thailand. He is a 73 year old Australian citizen but is married to a Thai national. He has lived there for 5 years and has just been getting his 3 month O Visa at the Laos border.

His O visa expired on the March 23rd and he received a 2 month extension which expired on May 22. He is now staying on Amnesty until the end of the month.

We really don't want to have to fly him back to Australia as he is old and not that healthy, also it will probably cost us $10-$20K to get him home and back into Thailand.

Are there any options that anyone has for him? He can't get the marriage visa because his Visa is expired and we don't have the money in his account yet.

Any advice would be appreciated.

TLDR : Answer Summary
A user seeks help for their elderly Australian father, who has been living in Thailand on an O visa but is currently without a valid visa after its expiration. They’re looking for options, as the marriage visa is not viable due to the expired O visa, and returning to Australia is financially burdensome. Comments suggest contacting visa agencies for assistance with obtaining a visa extension while remaining in Thailand, potential new measures being announced for visa extensions, and the importance of staying updated on official announcements from Thai immigration. Overall, the conversation emphasizes various routes, including using agents or embassy letters for extensions.

Many hundreds in the same position in Thailand. Hang in there. Rules will change. Don't forget he might not be covered by Medicare if he goes back to Australia due to time out of country

Just stay,they won't lock up an old man surely.

What about human rights?An OAP wound'nt last 5 minutes in one of those prisons,how do they get away with it?
Ivan ************
They "get away with it" because overstay is illegal and they are allowed lock people up for it. People routinely die in immigration detention here. The vast majority don't, but some do.

Not the only country this happens, people routinely die in immigration detention places like the US as well.

I don't think that's inherently true, they will lock up old men in normal circumstances.

What I don't think they will do is lock up 100,000 of them that are genuinely stuck here due to an unprecedented global pandemic outside their control. There is safety in numbers.

Whatever you do at this stage do not go through an agent. Tourist visas can now be extended with embassy letters, and there may be similar arrangements for long stay visas announced in the next few days. This will only set you back 1900 baht. Sit tight and hang in.

Bobby Howard I will delete my comment about it

Thanx for the update (y)

Although both Australia and NZ are issuing letters, I should emphasise this is due to the great difficulty involved in returning to those countries. The same may not apply to Europe, UK or US.

Siam Internacional in Bangkok ...they won't charge you a consultation fee. Call them and request an appointment

The best truthful and accurate info you will locate online is there are only rumours passed about by people who have tots and pears for what they want to see. Wait for Official announcements By Thai Immigration or pay a Solid agent $$$$$$$$... That is a minefield though, full of charlatins claiming to be "Connected". Some are real, some are not.
Daniel ************
wait till announcemenet next friday - seems ambesty is extended 2 months / or there is a possibility to buy a visa inside the country -
Bobby ********
@Daniel ***********
. I don't think the amnesty will be extended, as tourist visas can now be extended with an embassy letter and 1900 baht. I imagine similar measures will be introduced for long stay visas in the next few days
Daniel ************
@Bobby *******
saying that - what embassies are issueung these letters ? I see only embassies saying we not issue one -
Bobby ********
@Daniel ***********
. The only definites I'm aware of are Australia and NZ, both countries now virtually cut off to citizens, with a restrictive limit being enforced
Bobby ********
@Daniel ***********
. It's up to each individual to contact their embassy and state their case. I know definitely Australia and NZ are issuing them. I don't believe the US will, as they want their people back home. But I'm sure for compelling cases the respective embassy will assist. It's an avenue worth exploring before going down the illegal track with an agent charging anything between 15k and 50k

Russia too

i doubt that in the remaining working days - they can handle all extensions - commercial incoming flights might be delayed as well - Thai already cancelled flights for next month - so maybe we see a combination amnesty till september and visas inside the country -

@Daniel ***********
Having visas inside the country seems like the best step for everybody. And I guess they can not do that without an amnesty also, as everybody will go into overstay before being able to get the visa in country.
James **************
You posted this in another group aswell.

If he is on amnesty there is nothing he can do, maybe he could apply for a 60 day extension at the immigration office as he is married.

The only other route is paying an agent to get the year extension done for him. But it needs to be done asap. Alot of agents are saying they will not be able to help when it gets too close to the 31st of july.

Where about is he ?
Carsten ************
you need to contact some of the agencies, who will provide him with a new visa w/o leaving the country. you will need to pay about 25k all-in for 15 month. they will care about the bank book as well, that's included.
