TLDR : Answer Summary
An Australian citizen seeking to divide their time between Australia and Thailand, spending roughly six months a year in Thailand, may not necessarily need a visa depending on individual circumstances. For those over 50 years old or with family ties in Thailand, a Non-O Visa could be beneficial as it allows for multiple entries and annual extensions. A Multi-Entry Tourist Visa is another option, which is valid for six months and can be obtained from a Thai embassy. However, some users mentioned that, under current regulations, you might not require a visa at all if your travel pattern includes short stays and exiting the country periodically.

There are no "new regulations". And for your kind of travel, you do not need a visa.

why do you need a visa?

staying over 60 days it's always best to get the visa that best suits your stay purpose or risk getting quizzed or worse after multiple entries

yes his answer is very clear. So was his original question

Multi Entry tourist Visa

Valid for 6 months

Apply from Thai embassy in Oz

With entries in March and September the timing for the application and approval has to be very precise. Two separate Non-O's is much simpler and probably cheaper.

If you're over 50 (or have a Thai wife or child) get two Non-O's a year which is exactly what I do. No need for proof of onward travel or visit to Immigration for and extension, just remember to get a re-entry permit at the airport for your week "away".

agree simple but very effective

@Graham *****
, best advice so far

Used to do that until the Thai embassy in nz put their non o fee up from $120 to $800
Graham ******
I fail to understand why they have done this as no other Embassy/Consulate is anywhere near the NZ application fees and hopefully never will be

would like to ask a question about this. I will send you a message.

"Hello Graham. About the two Non Os. So each one of them is for 90 days. Do I need proof of funds when applying (at an embassy outside of Thailand)? Are you sure I can apply twice a year for a retirement Non O? I currently am on a marriage Non O that will expire, no funds at all at the moment."

Yes, Embassies approving eVisa applications have their financial requirements for Non-O retirement applications which equates roughly to 800k banked or 65k per month income in the local currency in any accessible bank account in your name. (400k and 40k for marriage). See their website for details.

Two Non-Os from RTE London 6 months apart is exactly what I have been doing since before covid (except for the lockdown).

ask it here so anyone can question any advice I might give

the very way as I'm sure that many others have the same question.

If over 50yo, I would get a non immigrant O visa on which you’ll get yearly extensions of stay with multiple re-entries.
Michael ********
DTV or tourist visa to guarantee entry. Might be able to get away with one exempt entry and one tourist visa. 150 days a year on visa exempt seems to be the limit immigration are going for.

Age?

So six months a year in Thailand ?

your answer is not clear. Seems you wish to spend total of 6 months/yr in Thailand.

Best option is enter with a Non O eVisa that you can obtain in Oz + annual extensions + multi reentry permit.

That way you will never have an issue.
