I am retired and hoping to visit Thailand 5 1/2 months total each calendar year on three separate visits. Do I need any specific visa, and if not, should I expect any issues at entry with Immigration officers? Thank

TLDR : Answer Summary
A retired person planning to visit Thailand for a total of 5 1/2 months on three separate visits may need specific visas such as a Non-O visa or a multiple entry visa. For those over 50, obtaining a retirement visa is recommended for flexibility in travel. Depending on the traveler’s nationality, they might also qualify for a 60-day visa exemption per entry, but it’s important to check for any potential issues with immigration officers upon entry.

no such rule, it's a myth. But, if immigration thinks you are milking visa exempt stamps to live here, then prepare to be pulled aside. In the OP case they are a genuine tourist staying a few months at a time, no issues.
