Hi All

I’m Australian working here in Aus and planning on moving to BKK to live. Will be flying back and forth to work every month, potentially 12 entries into Thailand a year no more than 2 weeks stay at a time. Is there a maximum entry number and what dramas am I likely to run into to ? Is there a multiple entry visa that may be suited ? Thanks for any advice.

TLDR : Answer Summary
An Australian expat planning to live part-time in Thailand, making frequent trips of up to 2 weeks at a time, is seeking advice on suitable visa options and any potential immigration issues. While it may be possible to enter without a visa initially, getting a Multi-Entry Tourist Visa (METV) is recommended as it allows multiple entries with 60-day stays. Alternative options discussed include the Retirement Visa for those over 50, providing longer stays without hassle, and considerations for keeping necessary documentation handy to avoid complications with immigration officers.

STEP-BY-STEP DO-IT-YOURSELF INSTRUCTIONS -- APPLYING FOR RETIREMENT STAY AFTER ARRIVAL IN THAILAND (Must be over age 50): i. You may arrive either Visa Exempt (currently 45-days), or on a 60-day Tourist Visa. ii. Then, immediately after your arrival, you must promptly open a Thai Bank Account, and transfer 800,000 Baht into Thai Bank Account (if married, some Immig. Offices like CM, accept Joint Account with 1.6 Mil. Baht. Also Note, that either Passbook Savings or Fixed Deposit is acceptable, but not Investment Account. Finally note, that some Immig. Offices, but not all - e.g. CM, require proof of foreign source of funds. WISE is an inexpensive, easy & reliable service to transfer funds). iii. Then, you apply for a 90-day Non-O Visa at local Thai Immigration Office. If on Visa Exempt, you use Form TM87, if on Tourist Visa TM86. You are required to apply with minimum 15-21 days remaining on permitted Stay, depending on Office (Chiang Mai, requires 21 days). Requirements: TM87 or TM86 (Note: Fear not, only 1-page Form simple to fill out in English with only basic info., name, address, passport info., arrival info, and stated purpose: "For Retirement"), Must be Over Age 50, 2000 Baht, Copy of all relevant pages of Passport (i.e. Facepage, and Entry Stamp); copy of TM30 (that is the required arrival form that is either completed by your Hotel or Condo, or you do yourself at Immig. Office w/i 24 hrs of arrival); copy of proof of residency (Rental Agreement, or Hotel Reservation -- some offices may not allow if only staying at a HOtel); and most importantly proof of the money in Bank (Copy of Bank Book, and a certified Letter from the Bank usually costing 100 Baht). Above is all simple and straightforward, so no need for spending money on a Visa Service. iv. If all docs. in order, Immig. Office will put a Sticker in your Passport that you are "under consideration", and a date to return to pick up your Visa Stamp (prior to your Stay expiration). v. Next, when you have 30 days remaining on the Non-O (and your Bank Money has "seeded" 60 days -- i.e. stayed on deposit), you go back to Immig. Office to apply for the 1-yr Retirement Extension. Requirements.: TM7 (Req. for Extension of Stay); 1900 Baht, and all other same docs. as above (newly updated of course). And, you will receive 1-yr Extension of Stay -- usually same day, if you arrive in morning. Note: For both processes above, your Bank Passbook Balance must be updated same date as application, and the Bank Letter should be no more than 7 days old -- easiest just to do both same day just before going to Immig. Office). vi. Finally, you should/must get a Re-Entry Stamp -- easiest/best to just do immediately after you get your 1-yr. Extension stamp. It can be single Re-Entry for 1000 Baht, or 3800 Baht for unlimited multiple Re-Entry. The Re-Entry Stamp allows you to leave and return to Thailand, without invalidating your 1-yr Extension. If you fail to do that, then your Extension of Stay is nullified, and you must start the process again. (IMPORTANT: If you want or need to leave Thailand while on the initial 90-Day Non-O, same thing -- must get Re-Entry Stamp.). Hope that is all clear.

Far more importantly, you were VERY Wrong, about not earning any interest in Thai Bank Account. Add to that your permanent mandatory requirement for Thailand Health Insurance, and I'll stick with my good advice and recommendation to use Non-O Visa, and 1-yr Extensions thereafter. Case Closed / Discussion Closed.

Feel better ? I admitted your the man
Wayne *********
@Robert ***********
omg your the man so right in everything
Wayne *********
@Robert ***********
you just assumed that all the rules around the world are the same so yes you were wrong
Robert ************
@Wayne ********
You are way Wrong. Deposit in the Thai Bank DOES earn Interest (and usually better rate than home country, at least USA). Also, O-X Visa DOES require Deposit in Thai Bank, and much more than normal Non-O (or even O-A), specifically 3 MIL. Baht, AND, also requires maintaining Health Insurance for entire duration of stay (10 years), AND, further requires Medical Check/Certificate and Criminal Check; AND $400 Visa Fee. No thank you.

@Robert ***********
I got my OX on a letter of salary over 5000aud no money in Thai Bank go look at Sydney thai consulate website. So yes OX visa. Yes insurance every year. But I like having health insurance regardless
Robert ************
@Wayne ********
OMG. And, you go "look at" the weblink I posted to Washington DC Thai Embassy. Either way, you were in fact wrong when you said money in Thai Bank Deposit, does not earn interest (in fact it compares very favorably with Banks outside of Thailand, sometimes higher). And, as you admitted, requires Thai Health Insurance, which is not inexpensive.
Wayne *********
@Robert ***********
who wants to have money in Thai Bank you can not touch ? Also earns less than in Australia bank. My insurance is not expensive it's paid for by my employer:) AND you were wrong about having money in Thai Bank so we both made errors 555
Robert ************
@Wayne ********
Not wrong about having money in Bank, per weblink I posted (you did not). And, interest on my Thai Bank Account Deposit is earning more than my USA Bank. And, I can "touch it", 3 months after approval of Extension of Stay. Or, if I didn't care about my next year's renewal, I could withdraw all money whenever I like.
Wayne *********
@Robert ***********
I don't really care about what you get or don't get. You need that money in the thai every time for extension. I don't need to show anything for 5 years.

You stick to your way and I will continue on my way.

You carry on about a simple statement where I said advantage of OX was leaving money in my own country which I am correct you can. I did not disagree or agree with your first comment so cam not understand why your being so stupid about it all.
Wayne *********
@Robert ***********
omg how wrong you are. I have the OX visa.

Go and look at thai Sydney consulate website. I did not have to have money in Thai Bank.

You need to look at requirements of other country's consulate and embassy before you start saying what's required

thanks Robert very informative appreciate that, long term this is probably the best way to go. Cheers

@David ******
big advantage of the OX visa is you can leave your money in Australia bank not in a thai bank where you can not touch it and it earns you nothing.

@David ******
You are quite welcome. Hope it works out for you. 👍

I already do what your thinking of doing. I have been 2 and 2 for 8 years. Decided to stop risking an IO questioning me and obtained the retirement OX visa in May 2022 to avoid any future hassle

Just flew Scoot and they were a freaking nightmare. I will never use them again.

@Sharn ************
really oh no I’m in a scoot flight this week!! Will see how it goes !
Sharn *************
@David ******
My Scoot flights were $1059 then $148 for good seats and meals and first to board on all 4 flights .

Then scoot changed my flights which didn’t match my fifo roster .

So it cost me another $1700 to change those to suitable flights for my work.

But they then made me pay for seats and meals all over again.

Finally they gave me a seat and meal credit .

Then when i went to check in on december 23 i found that 3 of my 4 flights were different planes to when i booked so i lost those good seats again.

I then had to pay for those 3 good seats for a third time as they would not let me use those credits for a flights already booked .

I had to only use them for a new flight.

When boarding i was pushed out of the way by insane people rushing to board and there were only 2 staff in perth to control the crowd.

They have zero customer support .

They are hopeless.

They charge for water , power for your phone .

They had wifi on all flights as i could see it but they did not allow me to buy data unless i was in premium economy or whatever they call it .

They have no screens so that you cannot pay for a movie although i rarely watch a movie anyway.

It’s actually cheaper to fly singapore airlines or malaysia and get everything included but with far better service.

That flight for me

was around $3000

My january flights are $1350 with singapore air.

I must say though that the hostesses etc were excellent in every way.

The funny thing is they say on their website that no screens reduces weight which makes the plane lighter and use less fuel .

We left the ground in singapore and touched down in perth in 4 hours and 32 minutes which was the fastest time i ever had on that route with anyone.

It’s usually 5 hours and 10 mins average so maybe those missing screens makes their planes a lot faster 🤣

sounds like a shocking experience, I don’t generally fly budget airlines but due to high prices in January took a gamble! Got my fingers crossed!

You should look into a long term visa (6 month METV, etc) because all it takes is one over zealous I/O to put an end to your frequent trips in/out…on the METV there is no limit to how many you can get in a row
David *******
ORIGINAL POSTER
@Jeremy *******
yep sounds like great advice Jeremy appreciate it.
Jeremy ********
@David ******
or look into the Elite Visa…the 6 month METV is the best option cost wise…

By any chance are you over age 50? If so, then all your best solution would be Retirement Visa (i.e. presuming you do not work in Thailand as your Post indicates you do not).

@Robert ***********
hi Robert yes am over 50 just ! and definitely not working in Thailand. If I was on a retirement Visa and found to be still working is there dramas with that or they don’t care as long as you don’t work in Thailand?
Robert ************
@David ******
Only prohibited from working in Thailand. Now, that I know you are over age 50, Retirement Visa is best for you. See my clear easy to follow Step by Step Instructions below.
Alistair **********
If you're only staying two weeks at a time you're probably going to be fine. You might run into an immigration officer who wants to hassle you eventually. Maybe have some evidence of you working in Australia so if asked you can show you're working overseas.
David *******

@Alistair *********
cheers for that Alistair yes will definitely carry proof of employment so forth with me.
Alistair **********
@David ******
I saw you qualify for retirement visa as well. You can just use Visa exempt entry and if it ever becomes an issue or you feel like it you can change to a retirement visa. Normally immigration will "warn" people rather than outright rejecting them.
David *******

@Alistair *********
ok thanks mate
Brandon ************
Will probably be fine without a visa but you could eventually run into issues.

You could apply for multi entry tourist visa that's valid for 6 months, and you'll be stamped in for 60 days each time you enter.

If you apply for METV you need to show a flight to Thailand, a flight out of Thailand, and another flight back into Thailand.
