TLDR : Answer Summary
UK citizens who lose their passport in Thailand should file a police report and then contact the embassy. They may need to get to the embassy in Bangkok to apply for an emergency travel document or a temporary passport. It's recommended to take a few passport photos and the police report to their appointment. Additionally, it's advised to keep a photocopy of the original passport for future reference.

On this subject, should one take a photo or photocopy of original passport for proof and relevant info ?

If you're not gonna get an emergency travel document you use this website to get a new passport from VFS Global in the Trendy Building on Sukhumvit Soi 13.
It's an emergency travel document. Not a passport.

Ok so police report and embassy, no trip to immigration? How did it go when leaving Thailand?

I'm a UK national and lost mine Feb 2017. Had to goto Bangkok for emergency passport. Couldn't extend my 30 day stamp as only allowed 7 days extension on an emergency passport so had to go back to UK early. Devastated!

My uncle lost his in Koh Chang, he filed a police report and had to go to the embassy to get a temporary passport. So make an appointment with the embassy ASAP and get there with a few passport photos and a police report and that's it.

By the way you don't need a counter signature or anything like that, you just pick up your temp passport at the embassy the same day as your appointment and hand it in at the British border.

Yeah UK national, on a tourist visa.

File a police report, VFS on Sukhumvit Soi 13 deal with passport applications. The Embassy can issue an Emergency Travel Document, if you need one.

apologies, I guess as i was just flying back to UK that is why they took it off me
incorrect, an ETD can be used against a planned itinerary, it does not have to be directly back to UK.

maybe if you get a police report and call immigration they could maybe extend? sounds a hard one though

I can get it delivered here. They will do it but my current 30 day stamp won't permit me to stay that long.
Ray *****
sadly it may be the only way, lost mine before and went back to UK, when you arrive in UK the passport control take the emergency travel document off you, so you can only go to passport office and get a new one

Thanks Ray, just want to avoid going back really if possible. I hate flying.

Ok got you. So if my itinerary involved being in Thailand in 6 weeks.time I could use it or not?

the emergency travel document can only be used to travel back to the UK. its a one way document. when in the UK you could get a new passport same day if required

An ETD will allow you to travel against a planned itinerary.

I'm on a 30 day visa but didn't want to travel home to get a new passport. Didn't know if I could use the travel document to fly out and fly in while waiting 6 weeks for the passport to come through.

Thanks chaos. I was under the impression that it can only be ordered with it coming from the UK and needing to wait 6 weeks. The embassey doesn't handle it anymore and it's done in Asoke. I don't think a UK national can get an emergency quick passport. Only travel document.
