What should travelers know about booking hotels through Expedia during the COVID pandemic?

Just a post about my recent EXPEDIA Booking !!!

“For information purposes only”.

I made a booking a couple of hours ago for February, 2023 in Bangkok, Thailand. I made it through EXPEDIA. It was at a hotel that I have stayed at several times before and quite like.

I received an EXPEDIA email CONFIRMATION with the BOOKING number which was also pre-paid through Expedia. I then called the property phone number on the Expedia Booking / Confirmation for the hotel. I just wanted to confirm same as I know a lot of properties in Thailand were devastated and many are still shuttered from the COVID Epidemic. It turned out that the Phone number was not functional, it was NOT a valid active phone number. I next spent about 30 minutes on a “chat” with a Virtual agent and subsequent live agent and was given a different phone number for the hotel. I tried that phone number, I called 3 times and it kept ringing many times before someone answered. I finally spoke to someone at the hotel. ( I believe he may have been someone doing site security and he advised that the hotel has been closed since COVID and there are no plans to re-open !!!! )

I then went back to a Virtual chat and then a LIVE agent who advised that my Confirmation was not really a VALID confirmation, that will take about 24 hours !!!! I asked if my Booking # or my pre-paid payment was also not valid. The agent asked for my phone number and called me on my Cellphone. I explained all and said just cancel the NON CONFIRMED booking. He tried to convince me to let him connect with their escalation booking team. That offerI declined and i said I would just cancel the booking which I did personally to make sure it was actually cancelled. Free cancellation on the booking was free until February 11th on the booking so no penalty in that regard.

I am guessing the reason for the phone call was that there was no longer a CHAT record. I could be wrong, but thats just my thoughts !

What would happen or may have happened had I not followed up directly to confirm and verify the booking directly with the property and had showed up on the date with my EXPEDIA CONFIRMATION, Pre-paid booking and an invalid booking number ????

Just be aware that it is possible that is some rare instances Confirmations and Booking numbers may not in reality actually be valid.

I just decided to call the hotel tonight to verify same and I am so glad that I did.

This is just my personal experience. Others may want to just double check their reservations directly, especially, in areas severely affected from COVID like Thailand has been. I for one am glad that I always follow up and confirm either with a direct phone call or via e-mail with each and every property I make a reservation with and have been doing so for decades. This is just for my own personal peace of mind as often I book multiple rooms. I have also on occasion used Expedia in the past with no issues, but had followed up and confirmed directly. In this day and age of computers and technology etc. in my personal opinion this is completely unacceptable and should have been avoidable. There are still plenty of other hotels open in Thailand that I know have re-opened and stayed at quite a few times in the past couple of years even during the COVID times. Thailand is a great place to visit and enjoy. Just take that second step and verify any bookings regardless of how you make the reservation.

Hopefully, this was a one time incident but for me Expedia is history.

Good luck to all and stay safe.

TLDR : Answer Summary
The author shares a personal experience of booking a hotel in Bangkok, Thailand through Expedia, only to find out the hotel was permanently closed due to COVID-19. After realizing the confirmation number provided was invalid and unable to reach the hotel directly, the author advises others to verify their bookings directly with properties, especially during these times. They express dissatisfaction with Expedia's reliability and emphasize the importance of double-checking reservations, suggesting that booking directly with hotels may avoid similar issues.

Always book directly w/hotel or airline. Make sure by email (best) prior to booking that confirmation is immediate upon payment. Check prices through Kayak/Expedia, but never book through them.

Look on the travel apps for the hotel you like to get a price then Google the hotel and contact them directly, 90% of the time they offer the same or lower price. Book direct to save money and cut out the parasites, in many cases no deposit needed as with apps.

that’s really not even close to accurate. The big players (agoda and booking) buy up large lots of rooms for a specific price. They help smooth out annual income for hoteliers.

So often the rates of Agoda or Booking are lower than what they will offer small retail clients. I have booked many a hotel room on Agoda while standing in the lobby of a hotel that can’t/won’t match the price.

And the apps don’t require a deposit

agreed I have done the same myself, in there lobby, no have and booked the hotel through an app while in front of them. Just they at the front desk don't know how it works out the back. So no have. 😃😃

for sure. It’s a very regular occurrence. There is no ‘cutting out the middleman’.

not my experience at all. My wife phone and time and again cheaper prices 2 or 3 days in advance. Many times without pre payment or cancellation restrictions.

anything can happen. But that is extremely unlikely the hotel will offer a lower last minute price if they are big seller to Booking or Agoda. And they also depend heavily on that relationship and marketing

If you were worried about a hotel being closed and wanted to call them to check, why not do that before booking?

That happened to me back in September. I booked a hotel and then the next day I got an email from Expedia explaining to me that the hotel has been closed and my money was returned. And I also received a 20% off coupon.

Try Agoda for hotel bookings in Thailand. Never had such a problem

Agoda had showed they had sold their last room at the property. I normally use Agoda if I do not deal direct with the hotel. Expedia was showing availability in more than 1 room category so I went for it. Just a glitch but if I had booked for the next day or two with a couple of kids in tow it could have been a nightmare!!

When I look at a hotel (or whatever) nowadays I always look for recent reviews. That is at least and indication that they have been recently operational.

If you had waited 24 hours the booking would have been canceled and you would have gotten your money back.

I did get the money back, the booking was free cancellation until Feb. 11th. That was not my issue.

just answering the question you asked. That is what would have happened if you didn't call to confirm. They need confirmation from the hotel and if they don't get it they cancel the booking. Same with flights.

Took me 10 minutes to read all that. How do I get those 10 minutes refunded? Or are they lost for life ?

If you know the hotel, why don't you book directly with them, without going through a platform (Expedia, booking, etc...).

The hotel may be planning to re-open, hence the booking was accepted.

That said, always a good idea to check the direct hotel website rates as they often may be cheaper than Expedia / Agoda et al.

Good you got it sorted before you turned up at a shuttered property, of which it would be good if you to name, so those of us on the ground here in LOS could look into the situation directly straightaway.

Thanks for sharing.

Cheers 🍺

it was showing only I believe 2 or 4 rooms left. That is why I booked. The hotel direct Link to their inside or booking platform was only available in Thai. The link for English would not work. Send me a DM I will give you the hotel name. I did not want to post the name on this board.

I usually book as far out as possible like 6-9 months out. This was a “last minute” decision / change on my part and I really wanted this hotel so I jumped at the quite limited availability. Agoda showed that their last room was sold.

yes, the dynamic of what they show is very different from long in advance. Last minute or so reservations always seem to have 'only x rooms left' which is BS

I agree rarely do I ever see very limited rooms. I started this 7 week itinerary in February and made a last minute change to add on. But it is still over 90 days out so I kind of rushed it more than my norm.

Understood. Long in advance is not the same. i only book 8-48 hours before arrival It's almost always there when booking like that. Booking.com or Agoda. Which are the same company anyway.

quite of I do with properties I deal with frequently. I have used this hotel several times but not what I consider frequently. Hence, I opted to book this way this particular time out of what I hoped would be more convenient.
