What challenges might I face when applying for a tourist visa in Thailand after several border runs?

I just did my 5th border run via airport and they told me that if I do it again, they won't let me in without a proper tourist visa. So my plan now is to go to Vientiane in 2 months to get the proper tourist visa.

My question: Should I expect any problems with the tourist visa process because of the amount of border runs I had? Has anyone been denied a visa simply because it's clear that they're not a tourist and are staying there indefinitely?

Thank you for any advice 🙏🏻

TLDR : Answer Summary
The user is concerned about the repercussions of repeatedly conducting border runs in Thailand and how this may affect their ability to secure a tourist visa during a planned trip to Vientiane. Comments suggest increasing scrutiny at Thai embassies regarding visa applications for those with a history of border runs, with some users sharing personal experiences of being questioned about their prolonged stay. It's recommended to prepare documentation demonstrating financial means, accommodation, and onward travel to counter potential issues at entry.

This year i did, arrived from canada with visa exempt. 30 + ext. online, vietnam 4 days, 30 + extension online, laos then another 30 + it laksi extension, then Vientiane laos applied for my first TR 60 days + 30 extension… Vientiane was easy, just print out a bank statement, also had a thai letter from a friend but they did not care

Hey how we do border run
Martin *****
Get a proper visa at thai consulate in your home country... alternatively use a visa agent to set up a long-term visa like Ed or elite visa...
Todd *********
@Martin ****
get the 'proper visa' (which doesn't exist) or just go ahead and get an dodgy Ed visa lol. Holy. Or spend a million baht on a 5 year visa you don't need. Lotta great ideas here.
Stephen ************
@Martin ****
Ed is not a long term visa unless you count 1 year as long term 😂

Seems like you answered your own question within your original post
John-Paul ******
Talk to an agent first... like TVC here.
Stephen ************
@John-Paul *****
Short term fix I agree but if you want to stay in Thailand long term you will leave yourself exposed for any clampdown by Immigration Police in fraudulent stamps

And before you say using an Agent

“How are they Fraudulent”

Simple Question

Did you have proof of the funds transferred from your home country

Question answered 🤔
Todd *********
@Stephen ***********
simply not true. No issues changing later. But why would you want to?
Stephen ************
@Todd ********
If you happen to get on the target list for fraudulent visas then how do you sleep at night knowing the next knock on your door could be immigration police?

The agencies do not comply with the immigration regulations ie funds in the bank etc.

up to you I guess
Todd *********
@Stephen ***********
there are dozens of perfectly legit agencies here.

How would I sleep? Exceedingly well. And what do I do when immigration officers do random checks? Show them my passport and stamp. Just like you. And then i thank them for their service. And then they move along to the next guy. Just doing their jobs.
Stephen ************
@Todd ********
You just come off a banana boat. ??

They would know you have a fraudulent visa before they knock on your door

You must think the Royal Thai Immigration Police came off the same banana boat as you

Wake up and smell the coffee because there won’t be any coffee available where the police put you 🤣🤣🤣
Todd *********
@Stephen ***********
😂 you must be new. Carry on. I have house plants with a better understanding of how agencies interact with immigration in Thailand. 👋
Stephen ************
@Todd ********
Knock knock who’s there?

Immigration Police

Deported

Banned 5 years

Now who looks after your stupid house plants now 🤣

Goodbye village idiot you’re becoming extremely boring 🥱🥱
Todd *********
@Stephen ***********
every time they look at my stamp we have a couple of laughs. I thank them. And we move on.

Strange you are talking about, ‘deported, banned 😂😂’ and ‘illegal visas’. When you really have a not a clue. Why you go visit an agent. Or better yet, an immigration officer and have them educate you. Good luck
Stephen ************
@Todd ********
You still here ?

I thought I told you to Jog on!

Guess you listen only to yourself 🥱
Todd *********
@Stephen ***********
I would expect this happens frequently to you. Not many people keen to listen to half witted relics nattering on. I might hire you to clean toilets, but seems like a stretch for your abilities.
Stephen ************
@Todd ********
Goodness me you are extremely boring

Just jog on you clown 🤣

Be prepared to stand any interogation at the border

You need to have the famous THREE proofs (already mentioned above but I am going to outline them for you in detail)

*** proof of CASH (no credit or debit cards or cheques) of a minimum of 20.000.- THB in Thai Baht or in another major currency

*** proof of booked accommodation for the first 3 to 5 nights after entry

*** proof of an outward flight, out of Thailand, within the 60 days you will get stamped in, regardless of the fact that you can buy yourself a 30 days extension. I suggest NO “onwardticket” (some call them “fake” tickets) but a REAL ticket, a cheap Air Asia one-way flight from Hat Yai to Kuala Lumpur for 32 USD
Stephen ************
I totally understand your predicament.

I entered Thailand in April with a 60 day T/R visa and got 2 extensions at the immigration office without leaving Thailand but then took a flight to Vietnam for a week and returned via Suvarnabhumi and almost got refused entry

It was only when a Supervisor got involved he authorised my 30 day exempt visa 🤔

As a post already stated they are getting tougher and I have 1st hand experience

NOT pleasant 🙏
Nongnuch ********
@Stephen ***********
pray tell us, how were you able to get TWO 30-days extensions on a 60-days Tourist Visa? Only ONE 30-day extension is allowed. Maybe the officer issuing the second extension wasn't aware of his mistake, but the officer at the airport noticed it
Stephen ************
@Nongnuch *******
Actually I got 2 x 60 days extensions based on marriage to a Thai national

Altogether 180 days but since then I went to Savanakhet had got a 1 year Non O marriage visa
Nongnuch ********
@Stephen ***********
"Actually I got 2 x 60 days extensions based on marriage to a Thai national" . . . . . . . never ever heard or read, that the 60 days "family visit" extension can be had two consecutive times. Must be new, or the officer made a mistake.
Nongnuch ********
@Stephen ***********
okay, so you got a 30 days extension on a Tourist Visa and then applied for the 60-days "visit family" visa. The "family visit" 60 days can only be had ONCE for each entry so they actually cannot be extended for 60 more days!! If they were, this was a mistake! After that you went to the Savannakhet consulate and got the "1-year multi entry Non-Imm-O family visa" without proof of finances. With this visa, you get stamped in for 90 days upon each entry, and you must leave Thailand every 90 days, i.e. before 90 days are up
Stephen ************
@Nongnuch *******
100% correct

I did put a post on this site about my experiences Savananakhet consul it was super easy
Jo **********
when you did a border run how long did you stay out of the company
Duncan *******
Given you are clearly living here and trying to exploit the system, have you considered getting a proper long term visa instead? A proper long term visa is the solution to all your problems.
Albert ********
Anything's possible.

just dress as smartly as possible, good to have a small selection of travel photos ready to show if questioned. Be super polite should be fine.

@Jon *********
what are you even talking about
Jon **********
@Franklin **********
last time I was questioned before I simply showed them my travel plans and nice places I’d visited and they could see I was genuine long term tourist. People up to no good or working illegally normally struggle to provide these things.

Were you told to get a proper Tourist Visa or the proper Visa i.e. a long term Visa? I fear it might have been the latter.
Stéfan ********
This is nothing new. The Thai government tightened its visa rules about 15 years ago, prior to which people were literally staying for years on back to back visa exemptions. Over the course of that time, I've had some friends who were refused entry, or given only a week to pack up, unless they get a proper long term visa. I myself experienced one occasion during which immigration officials advised me to stop using tourist visas. You'll probably get a tourist visa when applying to a regional consulate, but your 'tourist days' are definitely coming to an end. Note that getting the visa doesn't equate to immigration officials letting you in.
Dan *******
Can you take a bus out of Thailand? Then fly back? I need to leave on my third visa run this month, waiting to get visa from school
Brandon ************
@Dan ******
why not?
Dan *******
@Brandon ***********
just i cant take a bus back in. Wasnt sure if i had to take a flight out also ?
Brandon ************
@Dan ******
Thailand doesn't care how you leave. There's no buses that cross the border though. They'll take you to the border and then you get out and cross the border then get into another bus
Dan *******
@Brandon ***********
yes i have done it before, thanks man

Probably no issue *getting* the visa from Vientiane.

Its getting back in that'll (potentially) be the issue.

Having a visa is not a guarantee of entry, and the decision on whether you can or no, ultimately, rests with the IO dealing with you. Some people get away with just using waivers & TR Visas for periods of multiple months or years, others get quizzed or denied with just a fraction of that time.

All you can really do is make sure you have the Three Proofs (finances, accommodation, and onward travel ticket) available to show the IOs at the border vis-a-vis your phone.

Be also ready to answer questions as to what you're doing in TH that required so many visa-exemptions & now a TR visa, and as to how you're supporting yourself in all this time.

also carefully consider what your long term objective is in thailand. The more you 'push' the more likely you up bringing unwanted scrutiny. If your plans are long term, walk a careful line.
Brandon ************
Many of the Thai embassies and consulates in the region are tightening up their requirements for visas due to people abusing short term stays in Thailand. Recent reports of multiple embassies denying tourist visas if you've already had one. And even Savannakhet consulate not accepting tourist visa applications if you've had an ED or Volunteer visa.

You might be able to get a tourist visa if you haven't had one already. Two months is a long way away though and things may change by then. Also having a tourist visa does not guarantee you will get into Thailand.

I would suggest getting a tourist visa in Laos and then crossing the land border at Nong Khai. That's probably your best bet.

thank you for the detailed reply! So it's pretty much going to be a gamble haha and yes, I intend to take the bus back through the friendship bridge, I doubt they'd let me back in through the airport

make sure you wrap up any loose ends before you leave. No pets alone in your room etc. In the event you can't get back in quickly.
