What should I do if my flight is after my exemption visa has expired and I have a new passport?

We are leaving Thailand, but our flight is 12 days past our exemption visa. We are thinking about doing an extension. We haven't done one before, and we are worried because he just got a new passport, and the visa was in the old passport. Would an extension be put into an old passport or the new one? Would that be a problem? Would it be better to cross the border and just re-enter with the new passport? We are worried we will be denied reentry because we've had two exemption visas already. Any advice?

TLDR : Answer Summary
A user is inquiring about extending their visa exemption in Thailand as they are 12 days over the allowed stay and recently received a new passport. They are unsure if the extension will be issued in the new or old passport, and if this will pose a problem given previous exemption visas. Insights from the community suggest that it's possible to apply for an extension with both passports and that immigration will check the old passport. It's generally advised to extend the stay rather than attempt to cross the border, as re-entry could be uncertain after overstaying.

Just go extend at your local immigration office. 1900 baht. Check their requirements and take with you. Enjoy.

Just go with both passports and do the 30 day extension. You need a tm30 and a passport photo and an extension application. Doesnt take long. The immigration knows how to do it.

Thanks! We tried today but they wouldn't let us get a TM30 because we are staying at an American's house who is out of the country (they own the house). Now, they want us to stay in a hotel.

Do a transfer of Visa and Extension. Don't overstay.

they don't have any "visa". And even IF they had one, Immigration does NOT transfer any visas, as it is not one of their stamps

I had immigration move my stamps from my old passport to my new one. They don't xfer the paper initial visa. But they will copy stamps to a new passport and it even cites your old number in the stamp that says what Passport the stamps came from initially.

those were the entry stamps and/or extension stamps. These are Immigration's own stamps and can be transferred. They won't touch visa stickers or .pdf visa documents. And entry stamps ALWAYS contain the "visaclass" that was used, in the right upper corner

I just cited that I understood they don't transfer the paper initial visa. "They don't xfer the initial paper visa. But they will copy stamps to a new passport." We aren't disagreeing here at all.

I've lived here the better part of a decade and I am married to a Thai and I speak, read and write Thai.

My name is now a Thai name, monk given, and my surname is my spouse's. Sorry if I seemed to be disagreeing with you in any way. I wasn't.

For the paper "initial visa" you will need to keep both passports around.

You haven't got a visa. So go extend asap and take both passports.

If you entered on visa exempt and then got a new passport, you can still apply for an extension. They will check your old passport and want copies of your entry stamp from that passport, but the extension will go into your new passport.

Personally I would pay for an extension

I would expect more experienced posters to comment on how a 12 day overstay could affect you. Same with the border bounce.

@Wayne ******
12 days overstay may give you quarantine from entering Thailand for a couple of years.

don’t be ridiculous. It absolutely will not

I remember them bringing out a list of punishments for different lengths of overstays maybe going back maybe 8-10 years if my memory serves me well, but I thought the first overstay region was 1 day to 3 months. Maybe its changed but thats kind of how I remember it. I dont like black marks so always leave when Im due

Id be more concerned about being allowed back in on the visa exempt for a 3rd time seeing as that option could leave them high n dry
