What should I do after my Thai visa application was rejected due to a passport number error?

Ok, dreading to make this post for a while, but I assume it is always good to ask . So I finally got my act together (mid) last month and submitted the DTV. I filled everything out as it was supposed to be recommended, I even put together an 80 page portfolio out of nowhere.

I was already set back like one week because I asked something about the e-visa form which prevented me from filling it out correctly. After one week I got a six word response, no hello, good bye, in black letters on blue background. It looked like a 90s video game. That was already superweird.

Anyway, I tried to do everything by the book and I applied in Hong Kong, I have enough money, earnings, no extensive stay, overstay in TH, blabla.

Yes, I have also read the relevant sections here in this group, I think at least three times, I am also 100% sure I filled out everything correctly, but anyway I seem to have been a victim of that page 2 to page 4 conversion that I just forgot about. (There was only one number missing, I'm perfectly sure that was not me).

Nothing happened for two weeks, then I got this nice standard letter.

So, yes, put on all your snarky comments in there, I am over it. It happened already like a few days ago or something. After crying in bed for two days, revisiting all my life's failures and misfortunes and whatnot, considering other options (still do) I mean what can you do, life must go on, I guess I'll give it one more try:

So my questions would be these:

* (I guess there is no appeal process or anything)?

* I guess I can apply again, also under the workcation category, cos it was nothing substantial. I would strongly prefer applying under that category cos that's what I do, like I don't want to be questioned about some cooking course or whatever...?

* If it is strongly recommended I can apply in Hong Kong again, but if it's any possible, I would like to avoid that for several reasons (don't want to cluster up the thread more than I already have). I mean my main bank account, permanent resident, broker etc. are all in HK. I don't keep a permanent home in HK anymore though. I could rent another apartment on the monthly or something, but even that would cost me quite a bit more than mostly anywhere else. ?

* Is there any other, maybe friendly embassy/consulate somewhere, where I don't need to be a resident, don't need to have company (I am self-employed, stock market trading, I have enough history, income)? I am somewhat flexible with regard to location...

Thanks for reading and maybe any helpful pointers

TLDR : Answer Summary
The user discusses their frustration after their DTV visa application was rejected due to a mistake with their passport number. They express uncertainty about the appeal process and options for reapplying, particularly wishing to avoid a second application in Hong Kong. Several commenters suggest that the user can and should apply again under the Workcation category, mentioning it is unlikely there is an appeal process. They also share experiences with similar issues and suggest alternative application locations such as Vietnam or nearby countries.

Definitely apply again and make use of your 80 page portfolio!

The cancellation is due to your passport number being incorrect and not your application generally. It’s a shame this happens and you can’t amend the mistake. It has happened to so many people.

- You’ll have to pay again unfortunately and you can’t appeal.

- Yes you can apply the same as before under workcation if you have all that proof

- Apply in HK if it’s easier for you (search the group for info about HK, I think it takes a bit longer than other embassies), otherwise if you can and want to travel you can go to Vietnam or Bali and apply from there without being a resident. Vietnam is pretty cheap, I applied from Hanoi and travelled around Vietnam while I waited.

For your next application, check everything many times, for me, my entries in the form would change after I saved and re-visited.

Search the group for the embassy you intend to apply from and see what others submitted and their success stories / issues.

This was my application in Hanoi (soft power):

It's not even about the money. The whole process was like, we DGAF. First I had this like one week delay until I got some instructions from an 18th century chatbot or whatever that was to work around the first software bug, then all of my carefully curated docs were basically trashed by their very own second software bug that they failed to fix in at least well over 6 months or something. An no point of contact, help, whatsoever...

But what can you do, I guess we live in a medieval society, not just in TH....

I have mentioned this many times.

Unfortunately the machine messes up scanning the passport data page and can give wrong name, dates, digits etc.

This is an automatic FAIL.

We all need to carefully review what gets populated into the data fields at this part of the application.

Spend the money and try again…..

Maybe its time that this group sends a petition to the thai government and ask them to be ‘pardoned’ and have the right to ‘edit’ applications. It’s 2025, not 90s. Otherwise it sounds like quite an expensive scam. ❤️‍🩹

I truly wish there was compassion and realization from the Thai Foreign Ministry that there's something wrong and unfair with their application procedure. These canceled replies should not be happening.

They could have edited themselves, I sent them a high-res scan of my passport, that's about 10 seconds work. That's the prime joke here anyway , I suppose

It is an auto generated e mail, not a snarky response. The passport number was wrong and application rejected before anything else was even considered. Move on, resubmit and make the 80 page resume useful.

The snarky responses were referring to anticipated responses in here after me making such a simple mistake. The 80 pages were not a resume, as mentioned it was a portfolio mostly consisting of a lot of numbers and math, I didn't expect anybody to read that in full, but I guess it fulfilled the criteria.

You apply again.

It says your passport number was incorrect.

I applied from Hong Kong and got approved in 12 days after 2 rounds of questioning (1 being my bank being idiots putting my Chinese name down, and 2 I had to show more evidence I owned the websites I owned as I don’t work for people).

Crying in bed for 2 days? Jesus. Did you lose a family member? Why does your personal happiness and mental health hinge on a trip to Thailand 🤷

$400 lost over a stupid scam would give me a pissy mood for at least a week

Anonymous participant 590 Yeah, I switched to a DTV back in July last year. It was scanning incorrectly back then but luckily I caught it. The fact that they haven't fixed this in a year says a lot. They should either fix it or remove that option. I wonder why they haven't? 😉

@Paul *******
alot of issues with the DTV process I agree. At the same time, if Thailand said yes and blanket approved every knucklehead applying, Thailand will be even more overrun with Russians, Indians and Brits than ever before. Thailand should rightfully be rejecting some applicants. And I'm sure some people in these FBook threads don't give the full picture of their history, criminal, economic or otherwise.

@Nickel ******
I agree they shouldn't let everyone in. But if someone made a simple mistake like entering a passport number wrong, the app should not need to be re-submitted with a new fee, they should be allowed to update the info. People should pay to have their application fully considered.
Nickel *******
Anonymous participant 590 yes if everything else acceptable and passport number incorrect, should be given time to rectify mistake.

It was a bit of hyperbole. I tend to be somewhat hypersensitive though, very common Asperger's side effect.
Wannikea *********
All this over a lost $300 fee because you didn't triple check the only portion of the application that can't be amended or updated. And that after being in this group for 9 months.

I checked back and forth, took me at least two hours, but yeah forgot the final check...

I don’t think you have to worry about which embassy. It sounds like you had a comprehensive application. That being said, they are very clear, if any of you info (names, date of birth, passport number, etc) are entered incorrectly, that is an automatic rejection or cancelation. This is the same with all Thai embassies. Next time you need to review everything much closer.

DTV_BegPecker In some countries/region you need to be a resident to apply. Also in some countries you need to run a company to do the job that I'm doing, that's why I was asking, but thanks

@Stefan *****
most of the Southeast Asian located embassies have no residency requirements, but the East Asian ones are mixed. Most of Europe requires residency. Honestly, HK is your best option.

Apply again. No appeals, no refunds.
Andi ***********
You can apply again, it's unfortunate a simple mistake can be so costly. "Friendly" embassies are in Vietnam, Jakarta.Laos and Cambodia are "friendly" but can take upto a month for approval.
Pete *******
What are you whining about, you gave a wrong passport number, reapply with the correct number, this is not difficult.
Stefan ******

@Pete ******
For the record, I did not give a wrong PP number, it was scanned in and even displayed correctly on that page 2. It was just that software bug that converts its incorrectly to the final page. Documented here before. But yeah, in the end it doesn't even matter...

I get where you're coming from, happens to many people in here. Thats why theres so many disclaimers about double checking the information cause their image detection is faulty. My data was detected wrong too, went over every field again, double checked and edited what was wrong. It's like autosuggestion. Helpful sometimes but you cannot rely on it, in the end you need to make sure that the information is correctly entered into the fields
Luit *****************
@Marco ******
It can be their image detection, but it can also be your image.

Difficult to tell which of the two, therefore check and double check.

Passport number was unfortunately wrong according to the email .Mistakes happen, but just be more careful next time and don’t let it put you off reapplying.
