What should I do after my visa application as a digital nomad in Hong Kong was rejected?

My visa was rejected in Hong Kong, where I am a permanent resident and a final-year full-time PhD student. I applied as a digital nomad, assuming that bank statements and financial proof are the most important things for this category. So, I submitted three statements for one year, and the broker statement, which is in my calculation, is enough to stay for five years with no income, and I have a flat in Thailand. I do not have any employment now as I am super busy with my research, and I would prefer to stay in Thailand, reading and writing. After two days, I was requested:

* Other request documents: Letter issued by employer stating status/position of applicant, duration of position details, salary/remuneration and work space detail/condition with authorized person signature

* Document indicating current location: Valid HK stay permit (Student Visa) + HKID

I do not need a student visa, and I have attached my old job contracts. I also have a dormant company in HK, but I decided not to pursue this path.

I have attached a brief, polite description of the situation to all documents. Ironically, I just finished three years of Invisalign and implant dental treatment in Bangkok. I visit my doctor every few months (I still need to do a lot, but it is not urgent, so I thought this could wait), have a ton of paperwork, and can make new appointments.

I received this today: "Your visa application has been rejected. The applicant does not fall into any of the DTV categories. Refer to the Consulate's website for further details."

While I understand that any embassy can reject any visa and that HK does not have a reputation as a permissive consulate, I still feel somewhat scammed. I can afford to apply again from any Asian country and will visit South Korea soon.

Could you please advise on what steps can be recommended? I never had a visa in Thailand and never overstayed my stamps. During the last ten days, I spent a few months every year on average as a visitor/traveler in Thailand and the rest in 5-6 more countries—kind of a full-time traveler.

Thanks a million!

The upside: the whole process was 3-4 business days :))

TLDR : Answer Summary
The user's visa application for a digital nomad visa in Hong Kong was rejected due to not meeting the necessary criteria. They are a final-year PhD student and currently have no employment. The community responses suggest that the user should consider different visa options such as the soft power route or applying for a medical visa due to ongoing dental treatments in Thailand. Several comments emphasize the importance of qualifying for the specific visa category applied for and offer alternatives that may better suit the user's current situation.

May I know what's meant by soft power or soft power route?

Are you really going for a PhD? What is so hard to understand? You don't have a job. You are a student. Dead stop.

It's like applying for a PhD but you don't have an Associates Degree yet.

hong kong has always been an issue for any type of visa, they are not Asian Chinese in true sense more like strict Orwellian code, DO NOT GO TO SOUTH KOREA, it could be even harder, avoid "Asian developed countries" they follow rules to the T. The best would be Jakarta , just get muai thai course or get a letter from your medical. I understand since you are doing Ph.D you want to do it all in perfection, but I also faced problem when I did it to perfection. Keep it simple, use chatGPT to make a profile, I did it and got the DTV, again Keep it Simple

You said that you are having a dental treatment in bangkok so you should have made the application for medical purposes…

If I understand this correctly…

You are not a remote worker.

You applied as a remote worker at an embassy known for being strict.

You don’t understand why you were rejected.

Is this a fair summary?

Anonymous participant there’s a saying… yesterdays bullies are todays adults. These people are insecure and mean spirited. Ignore them. Everybody assumes the next person lives the same life as they and therefore already has all the information about the same things. People are stupid sometimes.

@Don ****
so, in the same comment where you accuse people of bullying, even though no one has bullied anyone, you then call them stupid… interesting. As we say in sxm, boooooiiii

yes. Bullies are stupid. The amount of sheer idiocy it takes to speak sarcastically to a complete stranger for no apparent reason is worthy of the title. No amount of mental gymnastics is going to change that. Enjoy.

Yes. And comments to this post clarify that a lot. Many thanks. I hope someone will make use of it.

Anonymous participant I'd try again at another less strict embassy. I'd try with soft power.

By the way, I'm a foreign resident in South Korea. I've got my DTV here recently, but they don't take DTV applications for tourists (for other visas is OK).

If your application was denial. You can switch to soft power.
Elías ********
You don't qualify. Apply once you've got a remote job, or try again trhu the soft power route.

You don’t qualify. You feel like you qualify. Make your life easier and do it withMuay Thai.

Bro its not that deep, you're the pinecone here.

lol. Too much blah blah .

You don’t qualify for digital nomad. You don’t have a job lol

Just sign up for Thai cooking classes or something. You are making it way harder then it needs to be lol

I started to apply with an agency in bkk , via employment , I work remote . Started to get complicated , just gave up . Bought a Muay Thai course and will do this way now . Simpler hehe

Why do you feel scammed? You literally didn’t meet the criteria. I think it was your own fault.

Just apply under the category that best applies. If you’re not a digital nomad, don’t apply as one.

Try a soft skill or the medical route, you could also try you luck using your HK company. But as you said it’s not in use.

If you have no work you can't get a DTV based on the workation option. You can try again using one of the soft power options. You also imply you were in Thailand when you applied which you can't do. You need to apply using the thai embassy option for the country you are located in
