TLDR : Answer Summary
If you cancel your work permit, you typically need to cancel your extension of stay as well. This should be done at the immigration office and is often suggested to be done before your employment termination date. If you can't leave the country immediately after cancellation, you can purchase a 7-day extension for a fee. It's crucial to handle your visa status appropriately, especially if your employer asserts that the visa remains valid without cancellation.

In a similar situation. Work terminated and have been told work permit has been cancelled by the ex-employer who insists there is no need to cancel our visa (which doesn’t seem right to me due to previous experience). Need to leave the country to get a new visa but surely with an uncancelled visa in the passport this will cause problems?

there is a huge difference between being on a VISA (which you don't cancel and just leave before the stamp expires) and an EXTENSION from the immigration office (which you DO cancel before you leave) ..

You go cancel your work permit, you take that and the termination paperwork to the immigration office and they cancel your current extension.

Most people do this a couple weeks BEFORE their actual termination date so that the extension is canceled on the date on the termination paperwork and then you just leave the country after that.

Canceling the extension the day you cancel the work permit works out like Ben said, you get your extension canceled, then if you can't leave that very day you BUY a 7 day extension denied stamp for 1900baht to get out of the country in a week
