Hi there, I was trying to search for an answer but I fell down a rabbit hole so I thought I'd just ask. Today is my last day working at one job, my Non-B will expire on May 12th. My new job doesn't begin until May 17th and I was advised to do a Visa run and come back on a Tourist Visa. I was just wondering if anyone had any good advice how I should go about it.

TLDR : Answer Summary
The user is transitioning from one job to another and seeks advice on how to handle their visa situation, specifically regarding their expiring Non-B visa and the possibility of obtaining a Tourist Visa. They have been suggested to consider making a visa run to Cambodia or Kuala Lumpur and to inquire about an earlier start date with the new employer to avoid leaving the country. The user reports that both their current and new employers are unwilling to adjust the contract dates.

May I suggest something here as we have a similar situation every year with our new teachers. We want to save them the cost and hassle of having to do a visa or border run and so we bring forward their start date.

For example, someone we are recruiting is having his work permit cancelled on 31 March. Normally our contracts start 1 May which is the start of the school year. But we moved it forward for him to 31 March. That way he doesn’t have to leave the country. Obviously we are both in agreement we don’t have to pay him for April.

Can you not ask your new employer to do the same? Or ask your old employer to change the date for the end of contract so it matches the start of the new job? We’ve done that for teachers who left our school and their new school weren’t ready yet.

I've tried with both and neither are willing to budge on their dates, but that had seemed to be the obvious answer to me and I asked about both of those scenarios.

Sorry to hear that. We have one new recruit this year that has to leave the country and come back. We are doing our best to support her. I know how difficult it can be at the best of times. I wish you the best of luck.

The date stamped on my Visa is set to expire 1 Dec 2022, but since I didn't renew my contract, my employer holds cancelation for 30 days to give me time to find another job. They extended it for me because they were kind. I'm much more asking about the process of getting the Tourist Visa in another country, either KL or Cambodia, and how successful that has been.

In your initial post you say May 12th now you say 1st december... can you just show a picture of what you've got (personal info redacted) so you can get correct advice.

I could be wrong but it sounds like;

They have a currently valid extension good until Dec 1st

Their last day of work was Mar 1

BUT

the employer isn't going to cancel the work permit until May 12 <- meaning that's their "last day" and the day they would go cancel their extension

you're more than likely right.

many people have done so in Cambodia but you need to check with the embassy there as they have different processing times based on the country of your passport.

there are no reports from anyone in KL successfully getting a tourist visa from the thai consulate there 😕

It's just not that many people have had to visa run yet

@Nitsuj *******
many people have gone to Cambodia and gotten tourist visas, you need to read the website carefully because some nationalities take 30 days to get their visas approved.

What is the date your contract with your current employer ends?

The final date of my contract is March 30, but my current company said they wouldn't cancel the work permit which would make it invalid until May 12. Today is my last day at the school, in the school, as it's summer vacation the contract itself hasn't ended.

Then you need to go to Labour office to cancel your workpemit and Immigration office to cancel your extension within this month with the termination letter from your current employer.

Then you have to leave before your latest stamp expires.

When your contract ends, your extension is no longer valid. And if you keep stay with invalid extension, you are considered as overstying.

Prepare yourself for departure for the visa run before the end of this month.

What date of your extension stamp says exactly? Not work permit.

I'm going to assume you're on an extension of stay. As
@Brandon ***********
says this extension expires the day you stop working so today in your case. You can't get a Covid extension as you were on a non-b and going on overstay isn't a great plan. You could go to Cambodia for a tourist visa which would get you 60+30 days or if your new employer is ready just get the new non-b now. But you really should go today

OP doesn't have to go today, still better to hurry
