Hello. Currently on a non B visa that will be cancelled at the end of this month because I’ve quit my job.
Am I right in thinking that the correct protocol is to leave Thailand (Malaysia) and come back on a tourist visa and then when I start my new job move onto a non B again?

TLDR : Answer Summary
The user is currently on a non-B visa that expires due to job termination and is considering leaving Thailand for Malaysia and returning on a tourist visa. A commenter confirms that leaving is necessary and advises that if the user has an extension of stay, they must obtain a job termination document and cancel their extension at immigration to avoid fines and complications in obtaining future visas.
If you're on the original non-B visa then yes you need to leave the country and can return.
If you're on an extension of stay then you MUST get documents from your job that say your last day of work and then go to immigration and cancel your extension before you leave. You can go about a week before the date on your documents at most immigration offices that way you don't have to to try and rush out of the country the same day.
If you are on an extension and don't do this you won't be able to get another long term extension in Thailand and you'll be fined 20,000 baht for failing to cancel your previous work extension.
sorry for all the questions. Do I have to go to the embassy or can I just do a visa on arrival at a border crossing? Ie go into Malaysia, stay the night and just cross back over?

I’ve an Irish passport, so I can cancel my non b, go into Malaysia, stay a night and just get visa on arrival at the border? I’m wondering why people have to go to the embassy then?
most jobs will not or cannot do this. They will just say they'll do it and then won't because it doesn't matter to them and nothing will happen to them if they don't. Also the extension has to be cancelled in your passport so unless you'll be giving your passport to your work then they can't do it.
YOU are responsible for cancelling your extension as you're the one who signed a document saying you would notify immigration if anything changed with your situation.
like I said if you have the original 90 day non-B visa, visas cannot be cancelled and you can just leave Thailand.
But if your have a stamp in your passport that says "extension of stay" then YOU must go to immigration after your work permit is cancelled and cancel your extension or you will not be able to get another work extension and you'll be fined 20,000 baht when you try.
ohhh ok so before I go to Malaysia I need to go to immigration and get them to cancel my non b. Then go to Malaysia, go to the Thai embassy and come back on a tourist visa?
