I am so stressed trying to apply for a 60 day visa. My surname has an apostrophe in it, I get a message saying name should be in English. Changed it on register for an account page, but now it won’t match my passport.

I’m in Thailand for 63 days in total. I’m tempted to just get the 30 day on arrival, get a 30 day extension when I’m there and then declare myself as an overstaying when I leave.

Is that a stupid idea? Will the overstay be picked up at the extension stage? I’m at my wits end with this.

Thanks in advance for any advice.

The online Thai visa isncrazy strict and doesn't understand some western style names. I have a "Jr" after my surname. There is no place to put this on the application. My application was rejected almost immediately, and my $200 lost, when I put my surname correctly. I suspect you'd be taking the same risk.

Blame the software morons who wrote the website code! I have the same problem with Bangkok Bank website and many other Thai websites. Write some comments in English and if there's a comma, hyphen, semi-colon etc in your text, then it's rejected. I think these code writers still think everyone is using MS-DOS......

DO NOT OVERSTAY

I can’t advise you on the 30 day and extension 30 days as I have 1 year Non B Visa and Work permit

If you are going to change your flights - If it’s not too late

I would leave ONE day before your Visa expires !

I have been doing business in Thailand for 15 years and living/working here for 10 years – I’m going to write a book 🥴

If you want to hear some good Thai stories Messenger me when you get to Bangkok !!

For the sake of 3 days, I'd adjust my length of stay to accommodate the 30+30 and do away with all the stress and anxiety of trying to stay for an extra 72 hours.....unless your visit to Thailand is a one off of course.... In which case, 3 days would make all the difference! 😂

Is it so imperative that you have to stay for the length of time you're planning on????

Matthew Bryning that’s what I’ve done, flight was free to change and the hotel wasn’t too expensive. Yes you’re right, it was the best way to go to get rid of the stress. Thanks for taking the time to reply.

Sue Odriscoll..... You're very welcome..... Might not have been the answer you were hoping for, but it was definitely the less stressful way to deal with your predicament..... Have a great trip.... Thailand is an amazing place if you choose wisely. 🇹🇭👍😎

The only advice I can give is don't overstay. Change your onward journey if you have to.

If you don’t want to get a visa I wouldn’t recommend breaking the law and overstay. Better entre Thailand on visa exemption, and after 30 days go visit Vietnam for a week. After that come back to Thailand for your remaining 4 weeks.

I have to leave out the hyphen in my name and then it's fine.

Don't do overstay!

It can lead to serious problems!

In Germany travel agencies get you a visa for little money.

Friends have applied for them, they seem to be always very successful!

I had accidentally overstayed 5 days on my second trip to Thailand. I had 60 day visa but after two weeks visited Vietnam for a week. Came back in thinking my 60 day covered me. Got stamps in for 30 days. Never taught to check passport. Departing Thailand I was fined for 5days overstay.

Applied for over 50 retirement visa two years later. I asked immigration would the overstay affect it. They said no. Visa and extension approved

It’s never a good idea to plan to overstay. Sure it’s “only a 500 baht a day” fine if you happen to make it to the airport.

There are various horror stories of people that didn’t and were stopped at police check points prior to that and if caught on overstay can he subject to detention and banned for 5 years. Very rarely happens but it could.

Also numerous posts in the visa forums that an overstay stamp from Thailand isn’t an issue to re enter Thailand but has caused issues with applying for visas for other countries.

1000 baht for the fine versus 1900 baht for the extension may seem the cheaper option but in the long term it may bite you in the backside.

I just leave the apostrophe out in all official Thai Government and banking documents.

I have found that banks leave a space btwn the O and B in my Surname

Would think at some point in your stay you could cross a boarder and re-enter to start your 30 days over. Just an idea.

Paul Tynan Is the file size too large or is it rejected based on an assumption that the photo is older than 6 months.

I done one yesterday for a friend. If you upload your passport page (using the photo option, might be scan, can't remember) it will automatically fill in the information for you. I had to try two times because the photo has to be very clear.

Can I just say it’s great to see such helpful replies to a genuine concern instead of the usual ‘oh you should change your name then’?

Intent for overstay can even be picked up at the airline counter and result in denied boarding. Then again at the immigration upon entrance - in TDAC you put in your onward ticket date… then your overstay will for sure get registered, fined, stamped into your passport and put on your records upon departure, which may affect your future eligibility to o enter the Kingdom.

The name has to match the MRZ area of your passport exactly. Look at the bottom of the page where your photo is on the passport. Is there an apostrophe there?

Sue Odriscoll airline ticketing also will leave out the apostrophe. I have had no issues with Thai immigration in 15 years in regards to this matter.

I don't think the profile name matters that much. It's the application that has to match the passport. Parents can apply for their children for example even though they are not on the profile. So you just need to ensure the actual visa application is a perfect match.
