What are the requirements for applying for an Extended Stay visa based on marriage in Thailand?

I urgently need some advice.

Today I took all of my documentation to the Immigration Office in Ubon Ratchathani to apply for my Extended Stay based on marriage.

My application was not accepted because I did not have an English translation of my Thai marriage certificate notarised by the UK Embassy in Bangkok.

I had never heard of this requirement before. It is not on the list of document requirements which the Ubon office gave me three weeks ago. It is not mentioned on the Thai Immigration Bureau website either.

I do now know if the UK Embassy will even do this and the last thing I need right now is to waste more money on another trip to Bangkok.

Thanks in advance.
Summary so far
A user seeking an Extended Stay visa based on marriage was informed at the Immigration Office in Ubon Ratchathani that they needed an English translation of their Thai marriage certificate, notarized by the UK Embassy in Bangkok. The user was previously unaware of this requirement, which was not mentioned in the document list or on the Thai Immigration website. The community shared mixed experiences and frustrations regarding inconsistent requirements at different immigration offices across Thailand. Many expressed disbelief at the need for a translation of a Thai document and suggested alternatives like obtaining the Kor Ror 2 document or trying another immigration office.

Why would they need to translate an original Thai doc to English.

The only thing I had to do before going to immigration was to go to the local office in our area to show we are still married

The Danish Embassy did it.

I think you misunderstood. It is not logical for demanding thai document issued by a thai ministry to be tranlated in to a foreign language for another thai ministry.

Makes no sense

There are agents in Bangkok where you can courier the document. They will translation and get it attested from British Embassy, then courier you back. But translation is required if using the document out of Thailand. Why would they need a translation of a Thai doc in Thailand..? Very strange..!!

I know this may not be a popular opinion, but someone seriously needs to take responsibility for Immigration in Thailand. This different set of requirements per immigration officer is out of hand. One country, one published set of rules, to be executed in one manner across the country. If each province is allowed to have their own rules, then publish each provinces rules on the Thai immigration website, and if they want to change the rules they should have to provide a changeover period and update the website accordingly. Then a large portion of these issues hopefully go away.

I honestly believe they are doing this to push using agents. Every single year we go in, there is some new BS changes or additions. Hell one time was denied one day because of one document but the rest were stamped and signed, was told fix this one document. Did the 1.5 hour drive back the next day. Had a different IO. And two of the already stamped and signed documents she did like and denied. The previous days IO was sitting literally next to her. I was like. How is this possible. Just got the cold should and had to go back on day 3. This is 1.5 hour drive one way, and going to the bank prior to get the bank print outs as well.

The problem is that agents have sky rocketed their rates. It used to be about 20k for a marriage visa. I was just quote 40-45k.

Ridiculous. That person at immigration probably just made up the rule to make themselves feel knowledgeable and important, not caring about what the ramifications and inconveniences are for you. Go back with your wife and ask the supervisor.

somtimes there is a missunderstanding in translation. If he want a copy this must be certified from the Ministry of foreign affairs Thailand and not from the british embassy.

The UK embassy will definitely NOT notarise any documents, way outside of their remit, save your money with the trip to Bangkok and try another immigration office!!

it must have been a misunderstanding . . . what you need is not really the marriage certificate, and NEVER an English translation of it . . . . . . . What Immigration wants to see is a FRESHLY printed on the Amphur Kor Ror 22 or 2, marriage registry document. Because you could be divorced already and still use an old marriage certificate for proof of a marriage that does not exist anymore. The Kor Ror document is freshly printed on the Amphur and shows the updated status
Andreas *********
Andreas *********
if you have a rose bordered Thai Marriage certificate, your marriage is registered inside Thailand. Then you need to visit the Amphur and ask them for the printout of the "Kor Ror 2" marriage registry. This is the document Immigration needs from you for an application to the 1-year extension based on marriage to a Thai wife

They want you to spread the love - pay extra for an agent (they accidentally know some - usually a family member) who will share the extra fee with them.

Why would they want or need an English translation? If you married overseas I could understand the need for a Thai translation.
Andreas *********

Alistair Grant . . did you get married in England, and have never gotten your marriage acknowledged and registered inside Thailand ? IF yes, the the Ubon Immigration offered your a fair and shortened way out of this calamity. Because normally to get an UK marriage registered inside Thailand, you need a formal legalization from the UK, which you have to have legalized by the British Embassy in Bangkok and co-legalized by the MfA. With these documents you can get the marriage registered inside Thailand . . . .Only after this, you can show Immigration a freshly printed marriage registry printout from the Amphur - which has been a decades-long requirement for the application to the 1-year extension of the stay permit based on marriage

something doesn't add up. I think you should go back and ask again and politely ask to speak to supervisor if you still don't understand.

I'm wondering if they want the British embassy to make sure that you were applying for marriage visa, not sure they would care.

also next time make sure you go to a different person....

20 years ago my mate and I stopped working at the same time, so went to immigration to get a married persons visa. They threw up every problem they could think of including our wives come the immigration office now.

After waiting for nearly an hour, we asked if we could get retirement visas. They looked at our bank books and everything changed. We then had a team of officers all helping, all smiles. Wonderful service.

“Translation notarized by the embassy” must be a way of them saying “I’m not willing to do it” - had the exact same with my driving license: gave them my license, IDP, PLUS a certified translation to both Thai and English… The officer requested a “translation stamped by the embassy”.

I tried to argue politely, I even showed her my country’s embassy’s website, where they state in bold that they have better things to do than stamping people’s paperwork so don’t even bother… she kept refusing.

So I went out, tried another office - same set of documents, same day - no questions asked, license issued in no time.

In order.. british embassy for freedom to marry by pre booked appointment.. take the freedom to marry documents given, to a translation service, that may take a day. Then that translation office may offer a service to send the translated documents to the MFA department for legalization, this could take a couple of days, then your free to mary, best to have a thai person that speaks english , required as you must have all the process explained to you in english, our translation agent provided a young lad who met us at marraige office, then they provide marraige certficates. I think the lad took a copy of our certificate and translated then posted to us so we had in thai and english. We did all that in bangkok. It was worth paying a agent.

It's not a thai marriage certificate most likely.

I assume you meant get your English marriage certificate translated to Thai then this is the procedure you should have followed starting in the UK -

1. IN THE UK: Marriage certificate legalised by the FCDO in Milton Keynes (2 documents, copy of original and legalised copy))

2. IN THE UK: Marriage Certificate AND the Apostille from the FCDO Translated (2 translations from 1., now 4 documents in total)

3. IN THE UK: Marriage Certificate AND the Apostille from the FCDO AND their translations verified by the Thai Embassy in London (4 verifications from 1. and 2. giving 8 documents in total)

4. IN THAILAND: All the above (i.e. all 4 documents & their translations, making 8 in total) Legalised by MFA in Bangkok

then register your marriage at your local Amphur.
