TLDR : Answer Summary
An unvaccinated Australian in Bangkok on a tourist visa faces significant challenges returning home due to COVID-19 vaccination requirements imposed by airlines and Australian immigration policies. While obtaining free vaccinations is possible in Thailand, many commenters emphasize the need to prioritize vaccination to secure a return flight. There is debate about whether Australian passport holders must be vaccinated to enter Australia, with clarifications that they may need to quarantine if unvaccinated. Suggestions include seeking vaccines readily available in Thailand, considering airlines that might not require vaccination, and exploring modified arrangements for those unable to vaccinate due to health reasons.

Lol.

Free vaccinations have been available all over Thailand since October of last year.

Many are on thier 3rd booster already.

Why would you have so much trouble?

Why cant you get the vaccine? Pretty much every major city/town has a free walk-in vax center.

I am intending to fly Air Vietnam. I thought they said I need to show my certificate but I may be wrong.

I have flown around the world and no airline has required me to show any vaccine certificate. I'm not sure which airlines are flying that route at the moment but have you tried a non-Australian airline? Like one of the middle Eastern ones maybe?

then you request modified arrangements with your doctor’s certificate and you will get an exemption if it is accepted.

Vaccination for COVID-19 is voluntary – as are all vaccinations in Australia – and people maintain the option to choose. Find out more below.

who are “they”? The topic is do Australians have to be vaccinated in order to enter their home country. No they don’t. Do they need to quarantine, most likely.

For Australian s -

If you don’t qualify as fully vaccinated and aren’t eligible for modified arrangements, you may need to complete a mandatory quarantine period. Check the requirements for the state or territory you’re arriving in.

You can get vaccinated in Thailand. You will not find Johnson and Johnson in Thailand (one shot only). You should be able to find AstraZeneca or Pfizer. You can complete your two-dose series faster with Pfizer (less wait time between doses) than AstraZeneca although AZ is probably easier to find. You then have to wait for a second dose. You then have to wait for 14 days after the second dose in order to board a plane.

In other words, you need to work on getting vaccinated now. Try to get two Pfizer shots if possible. Generally, if you are accepted for your first dose somewhere you will be given an appointment at the same location for your second dose. In the meantime, you should be able to continue on covid extensions (you actually have an excellent reason because unvaccinated you can't return to your country of origin). You need to make getting vaccinated your first priority.

I believe it's 8 weeks between doses of AstraZeneca in Thailand. 21 days is only the interval for Pfizer. If you don't have the extra time I would forego the AZ and look for Pfizer or Moderna. You can actually purchase Moderna from third parties (even on lazada and shoppee, or contact hospital and ask).

It may cost more but you might find that your timeframe can be shortened considerably.

They have been giving free vaccination for a while now in Bangkok, even walk-in.

If you've been here for 2 years then you wasted a lot of time getting easily vaccinated.

Start getting your first shot today.

he wasn’t an Aussie and therefore doesn’t fall into the “special” category. Aussies don’t have to be vaccinated but good luck trying to get on a plane. So… get vaccinated.

true. But the OP never mentioned quarantine nor whether or not he can afford it. He, like me, just wants to get home.

Read this -

Non Repatriation travellers - Contact details to submit a request will be available with your invoice. Your application for the low income reduction will need to be submitted within 14 days of the invoice date. If your application for low income status is approved, the invoice amount will be reduced and a revised invoice will be sent to you. If your application for low income status is not approved, you will be notified of the outcome and you are still required to pay the full quarantine fee.

The thing is you need certain time frames in between doses so that means that you would be stuck here for a certain while and eventually your tourist visa will run out also. Isn't it Johnson's that requires only one dose or have you thought maybe going to Cambodia to find that required vaccin and then go home.
