TLDR : Answer Summary
The post discusses the challenges faced by an individual nearing a one-year overstay in Thailand and seeks advice on safely crossing the border. Respondents highlight the severe consequences of overstaying, which include hefty fines (up to 20,000 THB for a year) and potential entry bans (ranging from 1 to 10 years). Suggestions for resolving the situation vary from surrendering to immigration, booking a flight, to humorous and extreme suggestions about swimming across borders. Community sentiments lean heavily towards urging adherence to visa rules and expressing frustration over individuals who overstay.

I’m sorry but how do you manage to overstay almost 1 year? It might be fixed with very very good contacts and a pretty big sum of money but I guess you don’t have anything of these things? Man up take the fine and the ban and leave.

Roy James I think you will find its laziness from govt who cant be arsed chasing real villains so everyone suffers. All governments take this route now. Ban things rather than fix it. This example is perfect. They couldnt catch this fella because they couldnt be arsed or didnt even know, so when more examples like this show themselves, they have to be seen to be doing something. Yet they cant? So the easiest option is to fk everyone over. Im not sure how reducing 60 days to 30 helps either but yet again, its just another anti farang move. The blokes a tit.

I find it amusing that saddos will do whatever they can to stay in a nation that doesnt really like them when there are other, more welcoming nations than Thailand

Thailand WAS one of the most friendly and welcoming places on earth but not anymore. Not even close

Wayne North "Ban things rather than fix it. This example is perfect".

Mind explaining this ? Guy gets into the country legally and disappears. How exactly do you expect Thailand to "fix it" ?

And how is Thailand "fucking everybody over" because of a 1-year overstay ?

Please use small words as I get confused easily.

TIA 👍

Roy James Vietnam's great. Also find it easier to navigate when travelling. Its more or less a straight line unless you come inland for a visit to Da Lat and the like. Great beaches. Havent been north of Da Nang so my next visit I will be taking in the coastal towns up to Ha Long and over to Hanoi and Sapa

Not sute Thailand would allow me in if my comments have been seen anyway 😄

Book a ticket out of the country before you overstay a whole year (the earlier the better) and show yourself at the airport 4hrs earlier. Once you there you surrender, pay 20k and get a year ban back in the country

Well you ought to know the harsh regulations. If you turn yourself in the punishment- ban to enter Thailand is more human then if they catch you. Anyway crossing at checkpoints the border they will discover you. Illegally trough the djungel or boat over Kong River in the dark? Or the southern border? I don’t know but definitely not safe

It's not uncommon for questions like this to come from anonymous accounts, especially given the circumstances.

Is the situation ideal? Of course not. But does it happen? Yes, more often than many people realize. That might come as a surprise to some, particularly those in this group who would never even consider putting themselves in such a position (nor should they).

how is a one year overstay an emergency????
Like

@Mark *************
This is something that needs to be addressed urgently.

Even a 1-day overstay can lead to serious consequences. For example, an overstay of 1 year can result in a 10-year ban if caught, compared to a 3-year ban if not caught and exiting on your own.

In some situations, these issues can be resolved, but as mentioned, it’s always best to avoid overstaying entirely.

We consider anything over 90 days an emergency, so it’s better not to let it reach that point.

Leave before the year pay the 20,000 baht fine and accept the one year ban. If you go over the year the fine is the same but the ban is 3 years.

If caught by police it’ll be a 5 year ban.

second this. Absolutely hand yourself in ASAP. It’s much better sometimes you can even be extra cooperative and have some favourable wiggle room.

The very last thing you wanna be doing is caught smuggling yourself.

Roger Groves not an expert but my guess would be he should book an early morning or late night flight where there are less passengers, and show up as early as possible to be the first person to check in and hurry to immigration so he can sit through paperwork and still catch the flight.

that’s what I mean? There’s only 2 options. Voluntary surrender or via police arrest … handing yourself in is a term for the former
